Exotic Dancers

Should I whisper? It would seem raising the topic is out of bounds. So is "exotic dancing." It's out of bounds. It's bad for women. It's bad for men. I said it. Nobody else will. Jesse Jackson hasn't. Neither has Al Sharpton.

Instead, they pray for justice, an idyllic type, where civil rights include not a single reference to civic obligations or personal responsibility.

Today's arrest of two Duke University lacrosse players, Reade Seligmann and Collin Finnerty, for the alleged rape of a 27-year-old mother of two has every element of intrigue — rich and poor, black and white, men and woman, North and South. It all begs us to take sides. And, in the flurry of passion, in the hustle and bustle of conflicting reports and re-election politics, we can forget what started it all: a group of kids paid a woman to entertain their sexual fantasies.

We've swallowed the term hook, line, and sinker. But "exotic dancing" is not an art form. It may sound like flamenco, salsa, or reggae, but it's none of those.

"Oh so naive, so prudish, and out of touch, Father Jonathan. That's what kids do. That's what we did, and look, we've turned out just fine. Is it right? Well, no, but that's not the point. We're talking about rape, lies, false accusations, prison time, and all of those are a much bigger deal."

The line of thinking on both sides is predictably shallow. Everyone is justified. The woman was just going to work. The kids were just having fun. If only those guys could have kept the party under control. If only she hadn't lied.

The story is too good to go away, and I pray that as it lingers, we reflect. What happened after the music died down was not an unfortunate consequence of an innocent prank. It is a reflection and natural progression of the immorality buzzing in the heads of everyone in the room as the music still played.

We haven't seen the woman's face, but we know what she looks like. Passed out, disoriented, and bruised — and she may have been all of these before her visit to Duke. People don't sell themselves for kicks. Her life was in shambles. Who is responsible? Among others, she is.

The guys who hired her could have cared less what she looked like inside. She danced and they laughed. Or did they? One of the partygoers sent a sickening e-mail minutes after the party ended. In it he outlined his desire to hire more "dancers" and to skin them alive for sexual gratification. That's not healthy.

TV anchors gasped at this weekend's arrest in Oklahoma of a man who allegedly killed, and planned to cannibalize, a 10-year-old girl. So did I. As I gasped at Oklahoma, I looked back at Duke. What unites the two stories is a world that now thinks differently. The Internet's unfettered access to the best and worst of humanity has changed what buzzes in our heads.

If "exotic dancing" was always bad, let's not forget that today it is much worse. For the Internet generation, it is a rung on a ladder that reaches to new heights of despicable behavior.

As parents and pastors take sides in Durham, let's ask them to reflect also on what happened while the music was still playing. And let's pray for justice, not the idyllic type, but the type that invites us to live up to obligations of respect and decency, of ourselves and of others.

The answer to prayer will take the form of parents who teach their children, by words and example, the beauty and dignity of the human person. Women are not objects. Actions have consequences. The Internet is not all good.

God bless, Father Jonathan

Father Jonathan must be talking to my folks. :? The internet does bring into our homes things that we wouldn't have as easy of access to. It brings in news at the click of a button, gaming sites, entertainment, music, and yes strangers.

Women are not objects and it is my belief that no matter what a woman's job is no means no. The problem being in a case like this as with so many there is he said/she said and then somewhere in the middle what really happened.

yes, no means no....but a stipper at a frat party no means take it anyway.

put a steak in front of a hungry dog and tell him not to eat it. same situation.

I have been to several strip clubs, for bachelor parties, and when a batch of the locals go to Husker Harvest Days, but I try to refrain. they all buy the lap ances and whoop it up, I just sit, drink a beer or two and think, what do the fathers of these girls think????

as I watch these guy paw all over the girls, thinking that dollar earns them a cheep feel or a gently brush with a boob, I can only imagine how the full blown hormones of a collage aged kid would be fired up.

the part that really pisses me off is the poor black victim of the rich white oppressor. Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton are wanting to push this to get more power, cash, and tv time. I will guarantee you they could care less about this woman, but they see the prize at the end of the tunnel. And they will walk over anyone to achieve that goal

I dissagree with the dog analogy,I think we as humans are more intelligent then dogs, but i get your piont........and your are right, its sad that people take advantage of the situation, just to get more tv and air time, for themselves.

We as a society have excepted bad behavior as being OK. Exotic dancing is demoralizing. There are other ways to make money. Exotic dancing is one step up from prostitution.. What is so exotic about this type of stripping?? We have to wise up and not except bad behavior in men and women.......

a guy told me once he would rather pay to watch a woman strip, and get no sex, than be married, watch her get naked, no sex, and then pay alimony!!!

Can someone explain............what is exotic about an "exotic" dancer?

They look so "continental". Kind of like a dancing, prancing Simmental, Charolais or Kickaneena. They wiggle their hips, swish their tails, and bounce their udders.

If ya got it....flaunt it! I really have no problem with what others do. what pisses me off is when someone tries to tell me or someone else what they should do just because they dont feel its MORAL or whatever. Whats moral to one may not be the same to others. In the eastern part of the state, we had a "mens club" that was out in the country, 3 or 4 miles from any town, and all the church ladys got togather, cost the county thousands of dollars in legal fees, loss of tax money, and for what? To shut down a business in the county that they wouldnt ever frequent.....

There are those that feel ranching-the livestock industry-as being immoral towards how the animals are handled. Its too bad people cant just take care of themselves instead of worrying what me or you are doing, especially when it is no concern to them!

Hey Jigs,
How's the wheat????

what the drought ain't choked, the frost got the other night.

had some corn peeking through, and it bent the top on it, but I think it is ok.

delivered a load of hay last week into Nebraska, and there was a funny look to this guys wheat......he said a neighbors spray got it....I told him it was frost. he then told me that the insurance covered the spray, not frost, so he was sure the neighbor sprayed!

I like my location, because we are about 3 weeks behind the big wheat country of south Kansas and Oklahoma.....market always takes a dump when those guys run out of thier 30 free storage. so we cash sell at the beginning, and try to lock in the rest, unless a year like this pops up.... I look for the wheat to be pretty good price.

Thanks Jigs,
We've been hearing the same thing through the grapevine, but the speculators are saying differant. We did sell a load last week. Ours looks good, but around Winner and Presho they have cut worms in their wheat. I guess it doesn't look good. Might want to hang on to your wheat as it may really take off... Roscoe said that two simi loads where rejected from Woonsocket, so they had to go to the grain exchange to see if they could sell it. Roscoe looked at it and said it was real pretty wheat, but had some smut kernels in it. He though it could be cleaned and be ok.
If your food packages say Con-agra, you are eating our wheat.... Enjoy!!!
