EXT

I've heard a # of you guys talking about the EXT line in Black Angus cattle. Of course, at the time it didn't apply to me so I didn't pay much attention. Now, I am wishing I had. The bull sale we regularly go to and buy from is coming up and there are 3 that I am very interested in, they have some really good growth #'s and look to be useable for heifers, which is what we need.

Anyways, the sire of them is F-R 232 Lad 5166 and his sire is F-R EXT Lad 232. Wondering what you guys think of that line up.

I know I don't want attitude in my herd, and if there is a possiblity of getting that with those bloodlines, I will avoid these bulls like the plague.

Thanks for any info.

EXT is not any different than any other bull in the fact that there will ALWAYS be some offspring that have ' quirky' personalities.

A lot " talk" of that comes from the way cattle are handled and their enviroment and how often they see people.

It's not just him, there are bulls of every breed and every color that the same thing is said of.

I have HEAVY EXT influence in my cows without one problem, genetic or behaviour wise.

Whether you go with the EXT or not....just don't let old wives tales spook you off a good choice. Do YOUR research and see what works for YOU and YOUR herd in the future.

I have no comment on EXT but I would suggest to go visit this breeder and walk through the bull pen. It will tell you plenty about the disposition of the individuals and the pen. Good time to see the cows as well. So much can be learned before the sale.

I agree. I've bought a few EXT bulls without problems...BUT I checked them out in the pen first. Just sort them off and play with them a little, you'll soon know fast. I do have to admit though, several EXT prospects failed my test, but the few who passed have been good to handle.

Good luck :D !

I had a bull that was very quiet as are most of his offspring but there's one that is out of a very quiet cow and she is a hothead raises a big calf and does'nt bother you if you don't bother her.

As far as your choice sounds like he's a bit removed from EXT himself.I have used some EXT son's AI and so far the calves are real quiet and very deep bodied animal's.Sinclair Extra is one bull we will be useing alot more of.Seeing the way you handle your cattle I bet you'll get along just fine. For a bull that's so bad in many people eye's he sure is in demand today years after his death.

I always like bull's that are sired by the rancher's own home raised bulls say's alot about the cow family your buying into.I've got a handful of cows that I breed just for my own replacements bulls last year I sold 3 bulls from those mateings that I should have kept but they will do their new owners alot of good.I bred the cows the same way so Maybe I'll get another bull calf I'm after.

I have a son of Sitz Alliance 6595 that is about as queit a bull as there is but he's coming 3 and seems to be getting big enough to cause some damage if he want's to.

We will be going through the bull pens before the sale. But, as the sale is 7 hours away from us, it is not feasible to go up several days before to look at the bulls. We have had good dealings from this sale in the past, and I do trust the guy we are buying from.

That being said, I had heard a lot of stuff about EXT's having attitude problems. While I realize, that there are individuals in every breed/line that are both good and bad, I had heard more bad about that line than others.

Also, having said THAT, we bought a yearling bull a number of years ago that was fine in the pen when we looked at them. A little spooky when we brought him home, but not too bad, and he seemed to settle. As he aged, he got bad, to the point that I could not go in the pen with him. Hubby had no problems, but he would paw the ground as soon as he saw me. I believe we sold him in the fall as a 2 year old. We have 1 cow in the herd left from him, and while she isn't a manhunter, she has a bit of an attitude.

Which is why I want to know a bit more about this line.

Their sire comes from Murray Fraser and he's sorted his EXT's pretty hard-the bulls your are interested in would be great grandsons of the old wildie so might be getting far enough out. I'd check them out pretty close-I've walked through the pen with their sire and grandsire come to think of it. I wonder if it's certain bloodlines that bring out the evil more than others. Whose sale were you planning on going to. I'm heading to Murray's in a month or so if anybody needs something looked at.

I was wondering where a 7 hour drive would take you- Bill has used some of Murray's Hereford cattle too-I haven't been to his sale in awhile usually in a hockey rink somewhere. I think he A'I'ed to my Lad bull's half brother.

It is all of 7 hours. But he has been good to us, so it is worth it. We've had some pretty darn good bull from him, both Hereford and Angus.

What Hereford bull would that be? Just curious, cause we have a really good Hereford bull right now.

No hockey for us this year. No team for our boy. He's disappointed, but not me

I am also heading to the Hill 70 sale, and maybe take a peek at what Oddan's have at Misty Valley.

Bill bought the 5P bull after using him A.I.

Randi, whats the weaning weights like out of those 03L calves?

I don't know if you got the DVD, but H-431 and H-432 are two bulls I am looking at.

This is the first year since 1992 that I won't be crossing the rocks for Mac's sale. I've been his BC sales rep since 94.
I'm going to miss catching up with all the good folks I've met over there. :(

5P's mother is a bit bigger than my 20P bulls dam but both very solid and sound Hereford cows. The original owner of 5P was interested in 20P too so we made a deal that he'd buy 5 and I'd buy 20. 20P had bred quite a few cows as a yearling then pawed out till just before the sale. He looked a bit fresher so I got a bit of a deal.

Well, hopefully we will see you there. I've never been to Misty Valley.

Average 205 day weights were 579 lbs on 26 calves. Couple of old cows brought it down a bit, but overall we are quite happy with the calves. 10 of the 12 heifers are in our replacement pen.

We did look at the video, but didn't pay a whole lot of attention to the Herefords as we aren't in the market for one this year. We have too many Hereford marked heifers this year, and don't want to breed those ones Hereford. Too much of a price dock here for Hereford calves.

Those 2 bulls have some pretty good #'s behind them, if we were looking for a Hereford, I am sure they would be on our list. The pic in the catalogue of #432 makes him look pretty good to me.

NR, What, roughly was the frame and weight of 5P's dam? Good udder and feet?
