Soapweed, Knersie posted an interesting thread on CT on eye set in Hereford cattle, did you see that article?
Having spent most of my cattle raising career in the tropics, I have always favoured using locally adapted breeds rather than trying to use temperate breeds that just don't give the same production/acre without higher cost.

Amen to that. I'm learning the hard way.

I have a perlino quarter horse filly and I was told that we can take her in and get her eyelids tatooed and it would help with the sensitivity to the light she has with her pink skin and blue eyes....too expensive for a whole herd I suppose, but might be worth an experiment on one :) Who knows it might be worth getting a tatoo gun of your own and traveling the country

I would rather the cows work for me rather than me work for the cows. There are some things that we have no control over, i.e. too much wind, too little wind, too much or too little rain, and what the price of tea is in China. As a rancher though, there are certain things I can control. Eye problems in cows is one of them.

I have a friend that buys all the bad footed cows he can. He trims them at home and extracts sometimes several calves out of them. His whole herd and replacements have been trimmed. (He used to be a fitter and has a table.) He buys these cows at a quite a discount and his outfit is profitable. There are several ranchers that when culling a cow or two for feet make sure he is there to bid on them. If these light pigmented cows start selling for a discount maybe it could be an opportunity for someone. As for me, I am with Soapweed on this one.

Soapweed there is a TV show called LA Ink about a tattoo parlor in LA. Maybe you could get your own show and call it Cherry County Ink.
