Fall Calf Prices

Anyone getting any contracts offered?
I heard today locally that one neighbor got offered $1.10 at 540 weight for his mid April/May born steer calves- first week of November delivery...
I didn't ask how many back on the heifers- but he said he didn't take the bid either.....

Some calves up here may be moving early as dry as its getting- and the crop of grasshoppers that are showing up....

We lined up a contract for a feeder in easter SD from a customer 2 weeks ago for Oct. delivery on a set of steers. 600 lbs at $1.15. Now we are trying to move his heifers.

Our calves are consigned to the Winnemucca NV sale on Superior coming up July 27-31. I'll have to watch some of the Park City sale. Our rep said things haven't been real good compared to past years.

That kind of money right there is pretty stout. I'd say that your customer ought to be pretty happy with that. If you figure a $0.75 cost of gain, ballpark, then they breakeven at $93.00/cwt on the fed market. It's been about three weeks ago, but the April futures was at $94.00/cwt. for a little bit. Right now it's at $91.00. Unless they can gain over 3.5 pounds/day, then those steers are not quite going to make the April market if they'll go up to 1300 pounds. (Yes, I'm probably underestimating the BRG genetic package) So the June futures is right now at $87.92. I'd say that was a real fair bid. If there is an Age/Source premium to be had and some grid premiums, then there may be a breakeven in sight.

Don't ya just love the cattle business!

I think he did quite good as well. The guy who contracted them may not take them all the way to kill, time will tell. Alot of the time, he will sell them if he sees he can make a buck. They are natural and have the Red Angus tag, so that helps as well.

Darn R-CALF anyway.

i just had this conversation with Balog in Lethbridge asking if there was some way to get pairs down here out of your country - but i don't think its possible on cattle without calfhood bangs. our grass on the river/lake is idle and looks pretty darn good and would look even better with two pot loads of some canadian hereford pairs. oh well.

i can remeber when all those feedlots went up in alberta we sold our calves as good as we ever did. freight was not factored in cause balog always had a backhaul for our calves and he had a slide both ways with no shrink. i think it was the year after all those feedlots went up that r-calf reared their heads. i think the mofias whole intention was to stop the northern tier feeders from going into canada and not through their hands.

Words of an objectively thinking man. Thanks for your insight Hereford76.
We're looking at a couple loads of pairs from that country ourselves.

Not a lot of cattle are being contracted. Several head of cattle being passed out on all the video and internet sales. Buyers are not interested in purchasing on contract when they think it will be cheaper this fall.

It has amazed me on how many contracts were not even honored last year. they payed their $40 or $80 and backed out, it was alot easier than taking the calves and losing $200-300 per head.

Superior had a sale just a few weeks ago now and I believe it was reported that 80% of the cattle No Saled / Passed out! That is crazy.

I am in awe at what our government is doing to agriculture, I sure enjoyed reading the Goggins article on our piss poor government here in the U.S.A.

I am in awe that cattle prices can be so low, when our cattle inventories are down and cattleman just about everywhere are looking for pairs to put on all that grass they have this year. I do believe though that bred heifers will have a great market this fall and I hope that cattle prices are way up and give the feeders hell for not contracting early. I hope the cow-calf producers can get it good

The c/c guy is going to need a good run here before too long or we won't be here anymore. I was talking to a fellow cow calf guy yesterday and his words said it all - "The fun's gone out of it...." and that has happened looong after the profit is gone out of it.

I watched some of the local and Montana calves sell today...Definitely not what I would call a real strong market... A lot of NO Sales locally....

580-590 lb steers $1.03 to $105....530-550 weights at $1.09.... :( Most heifers were $8 to $10 back....And a couple of these were large consignments (500-800 head)...
620-640 weights $1.04-$1.07...Heifer mates were $.94 at 610...

Some 680 char X calves were $99.50....

Most were for mid October to mid Nov delivery....

Guess maybe I just got spoiled when we had the record prices a few years back and these same 600+ lb calves were selling on these early sales for $130+ ...

I saw some 700 lb. calves that brought $1.05. Mostly it looks like 500-650 lb. calves are going to bring about $600-$625/head (give or take a little).

Of course, I don't know what sold or what didn't. That's the trouble
with video auctions.

Aren't the no-sales going to be the death of video auctions? I just can't see buyers sitting around supposedly buying calves all day only to have them get no-saled over and over.

One would think so. I know producers who no-sell their calves at one sale and they will appear on another sale; and even a third sale.
But Superior Video Auction seems to be alive and well.
