Farm and Ranch Arts and Crafts

Hi folks!

I would like to talk to a few people out there who are producing and selling some arts and crafts as a way of adding a little supplemental income to the farm or ranch family piggybank.

Do you do some? What do you do? Where and how do you sell your "creativity?" If not, do you know a farm or ranch person who does?

Thanks!

pointrider, do you ever watch the Prairie Farm Report? Among other things, half of the reports are on what people do to supplement incomes.
Anything from marketing farm inventions, woodcarving, metalworking, bed & breakfast, painting, etc. I see it every Sunday at 9 am. Here is the site where you should be able to find if its available in your area.

Browse around the site for more info. Good luck.

After drooling over Jinglebob's tooled leather saddle it reminded
me of this. If you know how to tool leather there is a market for
tooled leather handbags for women. I bought a huge satchel (holds
extra clothes, shoes, lunch)once on a trip- all nicely tooled, not lined, and it never fails to get compliments from women every time it is used
even though it is quite beaten up now. I've re-sewn
the bottom seams just to keep it going because it is otherwise so sturdy
and useful. They always want to know where I bought it and are
disappointed it wasn't local.

That is what the missus tells me also. She and Mrs Jingles Jr think I should make more purses. I just don't think most woman will pay what it will cost and they probably don't want to have to wait on custom orders. But I could be wrong.

I just got done with a huge, all leather rope bag.(ropers carry their ropes in them so they won't get lost or dirty or?) I traded a horse getting trained on with the young fellerwho gotit. He said one like it would cost him about $600 to $650. If I had to make another one, I'd charge almost that much. It was kind of a pain to sew around the corners and such.

I'm supposed to make a purse for Mrs Jingles Jr. We just haven't quite decided what style yet. I've made one for the missus and one for a neice for Christmas. They aren't as much fun as saddles, but they might make me more money.

Jinglebob, I don't think it would even pay for the time you spent when you have to compete with prices like these.

Do a search on tooled leather purses or handbags before you get to interested. I don't know what countries you would be competing against, but they can't be making more than $5 per day!

I've been an eBay PowerSeller for a couple of years.
I buy large lots of a product and then piece it out for the profit.

I'm certainly not creating anything, but I disovered long ago that what I like to create tends to be time-intensive and profit-poor.

Actually, you're probably right. There will always be a small, niche market who might be interested, but I guess I'm with fedup that it's not worth the time.
Guess what one of my time-intensive, profit-poor hobbies is...

Thanks for all the comments folks! Keep em coming!

Looks like a well-made trailer, Denny. About how many do you make a year? I have a good story I can tell about gooseneck livestock trailers if you want to hear it sometime. I am from Bryan, Texas originally - pretty much the birthplace of gooseneck trailers.

fedup2, I took a quick look at the website. I'll check the news from there now and then. Might be kinda hard to pick up those Canadian stations down here in Arizona.

nr, you are right about tooled leather purses. My wife has one. She finally decided she was not going to be able to wear it out, so it went in storage. Time for a change I guess. It received many compliments.

Jinglebob, please let me know if you want to try making more purses, rope bags, etc. Don't listen to fedup2. Ha! I know of several saddle makers who are famous and made good money because their names are on the saddles. Quality always brings more. I've been to quite a few tack sales. The "made in Mexico" saddles never bring as much.

theHiredMansWife, you obviously like selling on eBay more than creating something for the personal joy that comes from creating something beautiful, and that's fine. We should all do what we really enjoy doing the most. Having a good attitude and a passion for something is 90% of the battle.

Thanks again folks!

On the contrary, I do that too. :)

I cross-stitch, do woodwork, quilt, leatherwork, bead, and anything else that strikes my fancy. Now and again I make something to sell. but like I said, most of what I like to do is time-intensive but doesn't make much of a profit based on my time. Ie, I wouldn't make much were I relying on my hobbies.

So I do this kind of stuff for fun, gifts, etc. And make my piggy bank money in a way where profit outweighs the time put in.

Wrong forum Jason! Besides, even if it was labeled, Tam would accuse him of burying the Canadian purses, R-Calf would want the hides tested, & you and the NCBA would worry about Tyson getting its fair share of the profits!

The only problem with it being so big is-
lots of stuff goes in and NEVER COMES OUT!
Who needs a spa to lift weights when you have this bag!

Yeah we do a lil bit, built the one saddle for our daughter, and lots of repairs for friends on their saddles....We don't have a "shop" for workin leather, so it ends up in the kitchen, on the bar, and saddle stands sittin round.
