Fawn Calf Test Developed

AAA still is silent- but if the Aussies publish Dr. Beevers test results at least everyone will know the results on many US sires.....

Angus Australia has now received confirmation from Dr Jon Beever that he developed a DNA test for Contractural Arachnodactyly (CA) (formerly known as Fawn Calf Syndrome).

Our current understanding is that the current CA test that Dr Beever and his team at the University of Illinois has developed is more complex and time consuming to run than the AM and NH tests he developed in 2008 and 2009. Hence, the cost of running this test will be significantly higher – potentially as much as US$100. We understand that Dr Beever is continuing to conduct further research which may simplify the test (and thereby reduce the cost) in the future.

Dr Beever indicated that he plans to use the current test to screen several thousand prominent US animals for the CA mutation over the next few weeks. Once the results of these animals become available, Angus Australia plans to load these results on our database. These results as well as those of any Australian animals tested will become the basis of the first GeneProb analysis for CA.

The bull studs are releasing the results of their bulls that have been tested for CA...
A few sighs of relief around here this morning.... :) Altho they still have not listed all known carriers- and still have some pending...It was nice to know that many were cleared.....

Heres ABS's which is about the most thorough for old, new, and other breeds (red angus/simmi/brangus)...

I am glad to see the BANDO 9074 bull we have used quite heavily is CAF. Also Precision is CAF. Not sure how that happened as he seems to be everything else.
I was a little worried NR would only be able to breed EXT genetics for the forseeable future :p .

Yeah- I'll bet there were several breathing sighs of relief that they dodged a bullet..
I'm probably in better shape than many- as I only still have a couple questionable ones left with any of those CAC bloodlines identified in the background.. A Strategy (which they say "is pending") daughter and a couple of her daughters...
Altho I see where Strategy's half brother Directive (same 598 daughter is dam) passed his test with flying colors...

Yep--NR can really breath a sigh of relief- as old EXT passed his test  :p

You can get potential carrier report now through your log in on the Angus Web site. I am so sick of trying to test for all these defects!

It would sure be nice if they would release this data alot sooner than right before sale season. These fall female sales are gonna be a bugger trying to sell or buy when they don't have a test released yet.

I just was going through my list and it is suprising what is a potential and what isn't. I have one cow that for the life of me I can't figure out?

Oh well, it is what it is and we will soon find out. Might have to go with Jigs's advice and go back to Herefords where we started from!!

Whew. We never used any of those bulls.
We have bred heifers for sale this fall, straight angus
AI'd to Mytty In Focus with In Focus clean up bulls.
We'll be ultrasounding them in early August...if
anyone is interested.

Well Sic-em at least old Thunder came out with a clean bill of health....
Probably going to be some bull studs needing to look for some replacement bulls on their bull promotion lists :)

Yeah, that's good, but I wonder if that means Thunderstruck is clear??

I have a couple that I can't figure out why they are on the list. They go back to clean bulls, but still have the potential carrier deal on them? Maybe that will change on the report somehow?

I just hope the test isn't close to $100 like they stated in one of those updates. I know it is not a lethal defect, but I wonder if they will treat it the same as AM & NH? Guess time will tell.

I didn't see any connections to any carriers on his bottom side- just the 598 in Thunder- so I would think that since Thunder tested clean, it means Thunderstruck is too.....Anywhere there is a break in the chain..

My only ones I have are ones I was worried about anyway because they have Strategy somewhere back in there pedigree- and the last I saw he hadn't been cleared- listed as pending which doesn't sound optomistic..

I suppose you are right on the the Thunder deal.

The one cow that was giving me a fit goes back to 598 4 generations back, so hopefully it will work out. I also have one that goes back to Premier Independence, apparently the 1680 of the Fawn Calf deal.

It just makes me mad that they come out with this info right before the fall sale season for females. I have a bunch of heifers consigned to sales and have 4 that popped up as potentials. It wold be nice if they would get this all sorted out during the off times so we can pull them in to sample and get them tested.

I remmeber this time last year we were in the same deal with the NH problem. Took three weeks to get results back and by that time it was a week before the first sale we go to. Just one more thing to worry about.

Yep its been kind of a roller coaster...And about the time we think its got leveled out- something new will pop up..... I think the latest is the "itty bitty" dwarf syndrome that apparently showed up somewhere.... And I see on ACS they are talking of some "Bulldog Dwarfs" showing up again....

I have a couple bull calves that are looking nice- but have 598/Strategy quite a ways back in their backgrounds -- and if they don't get the test available pretty darn quick- I'm just going to cut them....

I wouldn't jump the gun on cutting those calves yet. Besides the FCS on the 598, he still did alot of good things especially some good females.

If they are good enough and clean, people will be interested in them.

Glad I didn't cut them yet Sic em-- I see this morning on ABS's website they have changed Strategy from "pending" to CAF... :D
That means I dodged a bullet and may get away without testing any... :D :D
