The FBI and Internal Revenue Service are investigating state Senate Democratic Leader Robert J. Mellow for unspecified illegal activity, FBI spokesman Frank Burton Jr. said today.
The agencies were executing search warrants at Mr. Mellow's home in Archbald and at his legislative office in Peckville, said Mr. Burton, an FBI spokesman in Philadelphia.
FBI agents are removing items from Mr. Mellow's Archbald home and from his Peckville district office. Agents carried filled plastic bags from his office and house to their vehicles, but refused to comment on what they took or the nature of the raid.
Mr. Mellow has been seen at his house and office throughout the morning.
Mr. Mellow announced in February that he would retire in December after 40 years in the Legislature
