President Barack Obama (AP Photo) (CNSNews.com) - In a closed-door meeting with House Republicans on Tuesday to discuss the $819-billion economic stimulus bill, President Obama suggested that Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal failed because it was too small, Reps. Steve King (R-Iowa) and Rob Bishop (R-Utah), who attended the meeting, told CNSNews.com.

“FDR’s initial steps did actually work,” Obama said at the meeting, according to King. Obama went on to say, “Then he [FDR] pulled back towards a balanced budget, and then what you had was a recession within a depression. Then World War II came along and was the biggest stimulus plan ever.”

The White House did not respond to requests for verification of Obama’s comments, and several Republicans who were in the meeting said they either did not remember the remarks or would not discuss the details of the conversation in public.

King said he interpreted Obama’s comment as an indicator of Democrats’ mindset on stimulus spending.

“I take it this way,” King told CNSNews.com on Wednesday. “If FDR had not essentially lost his nerve and pulled back towards a balanced budget, he would have spent more money, the New Deal would have been a bigger deal, and it would have then brought us out of the Depression. That mindset tells us what’s driving this stimulus approach.”

Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) (Photo courtesy of King's congressional Web site) Bishop was also critical of Obama’s remarks.

“It was his [Obama’s] revisionist view of history which is inaccurate,” said Bishop. “I have heard that history from other people, and I think it’s inaccurate.”

In an interview with CNSNews.com on Jan. 8, House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) was asked about FDR’s spending in the Depression and the current economic stimulus proposals.

“Well, a lot of economists tell us that what President Roosevelt failed to do was to spend as much money as was needed to get people back to work and get the economy moving again,” said Waxman. “And it wasn’t until World War II, when we had major expenditures, that the Depression was finally resolved.” Watch Video

The $819 billion stimulus package passed in the House of Representatives Wednesday evening, on a vote of 244 to 188 – no Republicans voted in favor of the package.

Pretty funny.

Just looking at the big picture of the "Stumulus" bill that passed the House last night.

Looks like only 5% would go towards "Infrastructure".

A lot of this won't be spent until next year. The details are still being analyzed. A lot of it just expands the current govt programs. It will expand govt jobs greatly but didn't Mr Reich say we need to give this money to non white unemployed people. I don't think that there are too many unemployed govt workers though. Hypocritical isn't it.

Its a hug pork project desinged to inflate these programs budgets so that in upcoming years the Dems can demagogue the Republicans by saying how the Republicans are cutting these budgets without acknowledging how they were previously inflated because of the stimulus.

If this is the Democrats definition of stimulus and this will fix supposedly fix our economy then aren't they forgetting and dismising all the stimulating we have been doing with the Irag war, massive welfare payments, unemployment benefits, medicare, medicaid, public education programs and the list goes on. But look at where we are today. It hasn't worked. Obamas answer is just double it I guess. I guess, if your going to go down, just as well go down big. I just can't see how we can spend ourselves into prosperity. Our problem is we have been spending too much in the first place and we just can't admit it. Our economy was overinlated because of it and it had to correct.

no Republicans voted to support it but remember this wasn't a case of split down party lines as 11 Dems walked across the floor and voted NO. Can Obama get everyone in his own party behind this plan let alone the Republicans? :?

CNN was reporting today that the stimulus would increase workers cheqs making $75,000 or less by $12-15 and the unemployed benefits by $25.

With those increases why wouldn't you go out and buy a large screen tv and a new house.

In all fairness though rarely does any party ever get every one of their members to vote unanimously on any bill.l There is always a few liberal Republicans that get led astray and suprisingly there are a few conservative Democrats too.

The idea that just because you have majority in the Senate doesn't mean you can automatically get any bill passed.
