And you know how Murphy's Law works-- this winter, which is one of the coldest winters in history so far, I have very little straw- and just fed up the last of the slough grass...
I broke up some old hay fields- and next year figure on seeding 80 more acres of wheat and 40 acres of oats for oat hay-should have lots of straw and cold weather feed--- so folks- I'm predicting the 2009-2010 winter to be "mild and open"...

I hear you OT, when my cows are done with the barley straw bunches, all there will be here is alfalfa/timothy top quality horse hay. Fed up all the old straw and oat straw reserves last year. Could be worse, at least there is lots of the good stuff!

My cows would founder if they got alfalfa.I figure that fancy hay is for milk cows.Ours are eating 4 bales of mixed upland hay 1 bale of slough hay 7 loader buckets of silage and 7 buckets of distillars syrup. They are pretty loose and every 3rd day they get one bale of hay thats to 215 head. The price of hay here it's cheaper to feed silage and by-products.

I don't own a tractor so we get our hay delivered to the cows mouths and I hire a neighbor to unload semis. It costs me $75 to feed 250 head for a week at a time. The cows still have calves on them and are out bale grazing and licking snow-theres about 25 horses running with them too. They are funny they move to fresh hay a day or too later-would rather paw through the last feed place. I really hate equipment-I mean even more than EXT's lol.

I love equipment NR, just hate using it. On that odd occasion when it is needed it sure is fun to fire up and have what you need. I no long have most of my equipment for work it now fits into the "hobby category". We are getting a taste of your kind of winter down here this year. It is nice to be able to keep the yard just like in town for my wife and her two wheel drive van.
