The other thing is that in our area, all the spring wheat has gone to sawfly resistant wheat which is solid stem or or semi solid. Cows don't like that as well. I have always thought cows like winter wheat straw better and of coarse barley straw is great. Have never been able to collect pea straw, but I am working on that, it comes in powder form.
Have you tried a Chaff wagon and leave piles in the field to extend your grazing?
I haven't actually used a "chaff" wagon, but have left those little dumps, from those little straw catchers that dump by gravity. Maybe the chaff wagon in the way to go, if it catches mostly chaff and not alot of straw. My problem with the little dumps is trying to farm with the straw piles that never got cleaned up. And the other problem is a lot of my farm land has very poor or no water at all. Years ago we hauled all of the straw in loose, but not setup for it anymore.
