Fighting for your health benefits

Why should you have to fight for your health benefits? You pay your premiums, why do you have to fight for the benefits. But apparently it's pretty common. So common, in fact that Parade magazine published a "how to" article.

Just what a person puckeing their guts out from chem wants to do, fight with the insurance company.

In fact, a friend had surgery last summer. She knew it was coming so she had bought the low deductible version of insurance (she's a school teacher) for the last couple of years and had saved up so she could pay her share off. When the bill came, she stopped by the hospital and paid it. She made some sort of comment to the insurance clerk at the hospital about the check they'd get from the insurance. The clerk told her they wouldn't get full payment from the insurance company. They never get full payment from the insurance company. The hospital would send the bill; the insurance company would deny the claim. They'd call the insurance company and send another bull. The insurance company would send partial payment. They'd call again and send another bill. Eventually, the hospital would write off what the insurance company refused to pay. But my friend's portion of the bill was based on the full amount. Seems to me that she got shafted there. Is it any wonder that health insurance is so expensive these days. :(
