Last month we celebrated my Dad's 95th birthday in Michigan and then my sister and two of her friends and I drove up north to Mackinac Island for an interdenominational Christian women's meeting. We took the ferry over to the island and stayed overnight one night in The Grand Hotel built in the 1800s and truly grand. You may recognize it as the place Christopher Reeve's movie "Somewhere in Time" was filmed(a time traveler romance with Jane Seymour). The last shot in this group is from the filming of that movie with him in a sportscar.

Four of us shared a room which helped whittle the cost but you can imagine 4 women trotting endlessly to the potty during the night.
The food was out of this world delicious, multiple courses, just tops. It is good we didn't stay more than one night poundage wise!

There are no cars on the island, only horses which was a wonderful change. There is one main street loaded with fudge shops and they call the vacatiioners "fudgies". The weather was a bit overcast but we still could see some Fall colors. All in all a fine trip. Here are some pictures including one of my dad and one of my sister. These photos were taken with a cell phone so quality isn't so hot:

We went on a round the lake trip back when I was 8 or 9 years old. Stopped at an aunts house somehwere in Wisconsin, than up to the old family farm near Superior Wisconsin and than over to Makinaw Island and stayed at the grandhotel.. All I remember about that trip are.

1) Catching a northen pike at my aunts house.
2) Meeting my Aunt Mable at my Great Grandparents old dairy farm and trying to keep the flies out of the car and eating the giant cookies she made

3) The hotel... It was a pretty neat place,,, Good fudge up there if I remember correctly. It was a fun tripe but 20 odd years ago... The pictures sure seemed familiar though.

Somewhere in Time....one of my favorite movies!!!
It was just on tv yesterday so of course I had to watch the whole thing  It was strange because it showed cars driving on the island and right up to the hotel which is not the case today. We spent some time walking up and back to the hotel ( no carriage rides for us but maybe next time) an seeing all the victorian era homes with horses going by did create a back-in-time experience. I tried to take only pictures with horses
in them for you ranchers.

WEll back in 82 or whatever it was there were no cars on the place either... I am guessing they did it for the movie for some reason or another.. MAybe back in the 20's or whenever the large part of it was set they allowed cars on but they haven't for a while.. It is a neat little Island
