FIRE!!!!!

Got a call from a neighbor around 12:20 this afternoon, to let us know our firefighting equipment will probably be needed. sw and I had plans to get all that stuff out and checked and filled up with water and ready to go...got a call around 2:45 to COME HELP!!! Their house and buildings were in danger...she was absolutely right, here's our trip to and the fire danger when we got there...very scarey...

Saw 2 bull elk in velvet, and a cow

Got there, the smoke was getting thicker and more black. It came out of the trees to a meadow which was a buffer zone between the trees and the house/buildings. This was a good thing, thought we could take a stand at the fireline which was built just below the trees (fire jumped) and another one built in the middle of the meadow. We won. This time. Fires are so unpredictable and scarey. I'm glad our neighbors have their home and buildings saved. The smoke was sooo thick it was hard to breathe let alone see anything, and hard to see with eyes watering.

Some more scarey pics

This pic was taken right next to the house. Fire tooooooo close for my comfort!!! I didn't get pics of the fire coming toward the house, too busy trying to protect it, that would have been a real scary awesome picture.

Here are some of the troops helping to fight the fire

We took a stand at the firelines around the house/buildings and won this time, the winds have changed and are heading our way

Here is the real kicker, we were kinda hanging around the house making sure that no dust devil picked up an ember and deposited it in the yard around the barn or the hay stack. One of the chiefs from the Shepherd fire department came and told us to go home, 40 mph winds and lightning coming, this fire is headed for your house, and there is no one left up there to defend it. Just looked outside, to the west, nice, a few clouds, to the south it is blacker than coalies behind, so it must be in the timber again headed this way. Did I mention that I hate fire. The dozer is willing and able, the fire fighter unit is able to go, and they went and sent my Marine back to Hawaii. This could be a long night

Yup, my dear, a looooong night and not looking forward to it. Being a city person I've learned one place you can NEVER wuss out on and that is fighting FIRE.

Thought of something else. Nothing in the world brings a man and a wife together as never before when they are both fighting fires together to help save neighbors and to save their own property. This fighting fire around here, it is neighbors helping neighbors (with the help of BLM, NRCS, etc). Most of the time it is neighbors finding little fires diligently after a lightning storm, and getting on the fire ASAP. Kill it before it gets big.

You are so right, Hanta and sw. That fire was way too close for comfort.

Our daughter was out helping fight the fire around Devils Tower. She says that drive from Hulett will never be the same. It is really bad
there as well. And she says, the Forest Service is just watching it burn while the ranchers are doing their best to fight it.

We have such great volunteer Fire Departments here, both in Baker and Plevna. I don't know how a person ever thanks them enough.
They are #1 in importance in these areas.
They are quick and well-trained.

God Bless all the fire fighters.

We've had a handful of fires here.none that serious, but the first thing we always did was take a disker or heavy cultivator-we always went around a few times and the fire cant jump it. Im not saying itll work there, but it did here.

Good luck, and prayers with all of you in harms way

It works, ACS when we don't have 60 mph winds going N to NW and it's not 100 degrees. This last fire, they made a fire line plus disc it (disced looks too funny) it still jumped one line, but we held onto the second line...we won....this time....

nothing more scary then turning your back to take a breath from the heat and smoke.only to turn back around and see it moved up closer by 6 to ten feet....I am glad all was saved and no one hurt to bad..i suspect some sore bodies and hot faces were left at the end....letting go of the adreniline can be hard on the body too.....I hope you all had a group hug and then a cold drink. You wont often find a tougher opponent then mother nature to battle..Good on you folks for helping your nieghbors win this one .

I've been to quite a few fires in my ife. I've never seen a group hug.

Don't believe I would enjoy one either.

You ever been to a wildfire, nonothing? If you've got enough energy for a hug, you wasn't trying hard enough!

And I ain't never seen too many afterwards, who i think I would want to hug. Bunch of sweaty, smokie men. Tho' when the ladies bring the refreshments, I kind of feel like I'd like to give them a hug, for their effort. But I never have.

I just bet they all appreciate that, too!

Amazing, but scary pictures. Thanks for sharing them. I hope you guys are safe and have the fire slowed. I wish we were closer so we could help you out.

Faster Horses...glad your daughter and crew are gaining ground on their fire, and hope they continue to get it under control.

You're all in our thoughts and prayers, and please stay safe-

Jigs you just gave me an idea, if we got those girls on the fires then every able bodied man would show up to help. No on second thought it would be like calling the FS in, you would have alot of bodies but no body doing the work, just looking at it and making plans for later on.
Come on JB lets have a hug now.

Your fire didn't get close to houses, did it? FH, our prayers with your daughter. Fires are nothing to mess around with...guess we'll leave the dozer on the trailer for a couple days...until this fire has been contained...or until the wind changes direction and heads our way again...

Wishing you all the best through this. Not a lot to be said, just wished there were easier ways to fight the FIRES!! I know that our forest service here every years sends several to help out up there. But, with Northwest Texas having the fires they have had, not sure where the guys are now.

We have been blessed here and only had one year we ever had to worry with the fires!!
