First calf heifer and a couple steers.

Some of you out there still might be wondering if all I do is talk about cattle or if I raise them too. Well, I do raise pairs and pick out a few steers from our herd each year to use for the 4-H shows. Here is a real nice PCC heifer that is out of a cow I purchased at Kit's sale in fall of '06. She's due in about 2 or 3 weeks. The other two are steers that I "roughed out" with a clippers last week.

Go ahead and rip them all apart, especially the heifer as she is one of the foundation cows of my herd. In my mind, I'd like 100 more just like her.

The Hfr looks good and deep. Should make a good broody cow.

Careful don't cut a ear off with those clippers.
 :D

 BMR, you are just hilarious! Thanks for the compliments on the heifer.

I meant your own ear as you stop clipping to scratch your head.

you need to blend your neck a little more on the second calf, did you mean to peel it so short on top?

Finally an expert :) You won't have to listen to me anymore.

no I'm not, but married to one who could clip cattle in his sleep! I don't think you need to be an expert to see it needs a little work?! I'm not trying to mean be either MYT....honest!!! :)

Heh, ya, that's what happens when you take a 7 month break from clipping. No, I didn't mean to do it, but it ended up that way. I know it needs to be blended, but it's hard to freehand that with the only blade I have: A Super Blocking blade.

I only showed one steer at Agribition in 1974. And I didn't clip that one so I think your probably a better choice to critique his grooming then I am. I just provide comic relief .
To bad you couldn't get on a job with a crew cleaning up bulls for a sale close by. Practice makes perfect. :)

remember......you can always come back, but its damn hard to put hair back on!!!!!! do you torch?

Boy, do I know that's right! I've spent 7 years in 4-H re-teaching myself that lesson. You know what, I'd lone to learn how. I had a steer torched for a prospect show last year, and it looked great. For now, I'm gonna purchase a medium blending blade to knock off the hair and make it all blend together a little nicer.

Actually BMR, I'd like to do that. They actually torch several. Unfortunately, their clipping jobs are a little faster paced than mine. :D

if your show isn't right away, I'd let the top grow to blend with sides, remember.....its real hard to put hair back on, if you get carried away on his neck hair, you're totally back at square one, instead of just the top....

A good cattle person can judge an unclipped beast as well as one with a poor clip job. If they are judging your clip job that is another matter. I like the Hf and a few hundred more wouldn't hurt you. I'll bet she will run well in you harsh conditions. Remember all that hair has a purpose, leather is good but when it gets cold, fur rules!

Love the heifer. Is she indicative of the females out of Kit's program?

Judging by her looks alone, I wouldn't mind having a couple hundred also.

Hello MYT, this is D'. Back when I was once told that if you have the time (3 wks) you can shave the whole neck to slim it down and to half way on their shoulders. Then after it has grown back you can go and blend in the shoulders where you shaved. This is to only be done if you can afford the grow back period. :!: :!:

Like your heifer and your steers look good.
