First romance, in honor of Valentine's Day soon to come

My dad and his bride were recently doing some house cleaning and presented me with a box of some of my old stuff. In it was a small glass jar with a tin lid. It wasn't the same jar, but it did "jar" my memory.

Before I was old enough to attend Kindergarten, my folks took me to see the school Christmas program. One of the teachers was a beautiful young single lady who I immediately fell head-over-heels in love with. Her name was Miss Gumbrick, and I was completely enchanted. A couple more times it was my privilege to see this lovely lady, and each time strengthened my emfatuation with her. Alas, she didn't even know I existed.

The following summer, Dad hired a young man by the name of Bob to help with haying. He was dating Miss Gumbrick, and I was quite jealous. Being the nice guy that he was, Bob offered to share the love of this beautiful lady. He said she would be a girlfriend to both of us. That was fine with me because it was better than nothing.

One morning when it was too wet to hay, Dad and Bob were cutting sod to be laid down in our house yard. I was along, probably neither helping or hindering. A mole was displaced so Bob and I competed to see who could catch it. He won. We had along a glass jar for a water jug, so dumped out the water and poked holes in the lid as a haven for the mole. I wanted that mole in the worst way. Bob had an inspiration. He said, "Tell you what I'll do, I'll trade you the mole for your half interest in Miss Gumbrick."

Boy, that was a tough decision but instant gratification won out. The trade was made, and I was the proud owner of a blind mole in a glass jar. I think a day or two later my mom convinced me to turn the mole loose. It wasn't too hard to do, because by then the novelty had worn off. I still had fond memories of Miss Gumbrick, but I stuck true to the trade and gave her up to Bob. After all, a deal is a deal, and we had shaken hands to seal the transaction. :)
