Flooded well spills oil into floodwaters near confluence of Yellowstone and Missouri rivers

By Amy Dalrymple on Mar 14, 2014 at 7:12 p.m.

TRENTON, N.D. – Oil from one well has spilled into floodwaters near the confluence of the Yellowstone and Missouri rivers, where the rising waters threaten a total of 38 oil wells.

North Dakota officials did an aerial inspection Friday and counted nine wells that are inundated with floodwaters, said Dennis Fewless, Director of the Division of Water Quality for the North Dakota Department of Health.

While most of the wells are surrounded with dikes that contained any potential releases, one oil well had a visible sheen coming off it Friday where oil was floating on top of the water, Fewless said.

The amount of oil that has been released is unknown. From the air, it appears that the release may have come from a tank that tipped over, but officials won’t know for sure until they can get on site, Fewless said.

Health officials are in contact with the owner of the well, Zavanna, about accessing it by boat to contain the release with booms, Fewless said.

The health department and the Department of Mineral Resources Oil and Gas Division plan to continue monitoring the flooding this weekend. A total of 38 wells have the potential to be flooded as a result of ice jams downstream from the well sites.

Oil companies started taking precautions this week in advance of the flooding, such as shutting in wells and moving equipment.

The Missouri River at Williston was at 26 feet Friday, considered to be major flood stage, said Todd Hamilton, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Bismarck.

The forecast calls for the river to rise slightly to 26.5 feet before it starts going down toward the end of the weekend, Hamilton said.

However, there is potential for ice jams to occur on the Missouri River, which could cause the river level to fluctuate by 1 to 2 feet, he said.

The Yellowstone joins the Missouri River about 22 miles southwest of Williston near the Montana state line.

In that same area, the American Red Cross is assisting four families who have been displaced by flooding.

The Red Cross office in Minot will deploy a casework team to East Fairview Saturday to meet with clients to provide food, clothing and lodging. East Fairview is an unincorporated community across the border from Fairview, Mont., near the Yellowstone River and about 40 miles west of Watford City.

Nine people stayed at a shelter set up in Fairview to assist people affected by flooding, said the Rev. Kelly Sloan of Fairview Alliance Church, which is providing space for the shelter.

The shelter is supported by the Montana Red Cross and Dakotas Region Red Cross. Requests for shelter must go through the Red Cross, Sloan said.

The families who were displaced were living in campers, said Jerry Samuelson, emergency manager for McKenzie County.

Red Cross case workers plan to meet with the families Saturday to help them find long-term housing, which may be a challenge in the oil-impacted area, said Brian Shawn, communications officer for the Dakotas Region.

“Housing is obviously at a premium,” Shawn said.

The Red Cross also plans to keep shelter supplies in the area in the event of ice jams or additional flooding, Shawn said.

I can just imagine what the greenies will say about this... Between the Nebraska NIMBY's that keep shutting down XL pipeline, the anti-train folks, like many on here that can't stand to see Buffett make a buck, and now environment problems-- its a wonder gas isn't $10 a gallon...

Buckwheat said himself that gas should be $8.00/gal in the U.S. And it appears that he's doing everything to reach that goal.

Reap what you sow..............................

"As long as we're paying $2.00 for a gallon of gas, nobody is going to try to built hybrid and electric automobiles", he told his audience. "I want the country to be self-sufficient and not keep digging out oil."

Asked how the American consumer can afford $8.00 per gallon for gas, the President stated that it was for their own good.

"It's tough love. You will HAVE to carpool more and save up to buy electric cars. Electric cars are the cars of the future. We have to move on past this oil consumption thing. It is ruining the environment. We'll just have to grit our teeth and take it."

He's the "NIMBY IN CHIEF"!!!!

So out of curiosity, lets say that you have a true toxin exposure, what would you do to decrease the potency of it?

I'll give you a hint- it's called dilution. So the heavy flooding that is causing the issue, is actually the answer to a spill.

I just don' get it OT. You complain about a sheen of oil on top of, what did your article say- 20 something feet of water? Yet you won't support a pipeline to clean up thousands of acres of exposed tar sand oil in Canada?

#1 Who's complaining :???: Not me- I just posted the article for all you folks that watch FAUX News and only get knowledge of 1% of what happens in the world...

#2- Its downstream from me- so I don't even have skin in the game... BUT I will bet that when the greenie weenies catch news of it-- it will be used as ammo to keep many more drilling permits from being issued.... So even FAUX News viewers should be made aware of the situation..

#3-- iwannabeacowboy---You are either a total ignoramus or a flat out liar... I have been one of the biggest backers of the XL pipeline and some of the proposed mini pipelines since day one...

Find one place I OPPOSED the XL pipeline...

And I do have skin in that game-- as the pipeline comes right thru our county and means they will pick up a large percentage of our property taxes... Our school district last year (using the spiel that the pipeline was coming and would pick up much of the cost) got the voters to approve a complete new building of 1 school and remodeling of 2 others... Without the pipeline- it will be the landowners paying the total cost thru their property taxes....

And thankfully the CEO of the pipeline was in the area again just a few days ago-- and is still convinced they will get approval as soon as they work out the problems in Nebraska again which he indicated could only take a couple of months this time...

Seems like your fellow residents in Valley county aren't any brighter than you, to vote something that costly in before any money has changed hands. I'm quite sure you voted for it, due to the fact that libtards always want the benefit of somebody else's money without having to pony up any of their own. Talk about counting your chickens....

Actually you too are wrong... I opposed it all the way... At least until the pipeline was authorized... And now that the bond issue cost hit the tax rolls for the first year (without the pipeline payments included)- I have a lot more that agree with me...
But we are a very progressive county- especially on education... And the people care strongly about the education of their kids and grandkids even if it means a bigger burden on themselves... While I agree with that idea - I thought it was just wrong timing....

Oh, boy... Let me help you.

1. You voted for B.O.
2. The president is the one to decide if it is approved or not.
3. B.O. has delayed EVEN making a decision on the XL pipeline till now.
4. Therefore, you voted for the administration that is opposed to the XL pipeline.

Your vote has consequences there, Hero. You shot your own county in the foot, just like the rest of America.

Now, please tell me that you really thought Obama was going to allow it... please? I'll even warn you that I have the quote ready.

Before I forget, do you even know where your skin is at? It's not in the game, before it is in the game.

And lastly, since you called me a liar, I'll make a wager with you... I bet I can find 20 of your lies posted here, if you can find a single place I've lied. If I win, you have to live up to your word and go away like you said you were..... oops, there's number 1. If you win, I'll stop posting. Remember, it's a 20 to 1 deal. Want to take it?

Moving oil by train costs twice that of pipelines too.

$4-$5 by pipe

$7-$8 by rail

Buckwheat said he wanted gasoline to be $8.00 in the U.S.

Crude Oil Shipments Up 83 Percent On Us Railroads
Friday, March 14th 2014
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The number of carloads of crude oil U.S. railroads delivered last year surged 83 percent over 2012 as concerns about the shipments grow.

The Association of American Railroads said Thursday the major U.S. railroads delivered 434,042 carloads of crude oil in 2013.

That's well above the 236,556 carloads of crude oil railroads delivered in 2012. Crude oil shipments remain a relatively small part of rail traffic, but they have grown significantly since 2008 when 9,344 carloads were delivered.

Three fiery derailments involving crude oil in the past year led to increased concerns about the shipments even though railroads' overall safety record remains good. The worst of those killed 47 people in Lac-Megantic, Quebec.

Federal regulators are also considering requiring upgrades to the tank cars railroads use.

At least over the last few years we've alleviated much of our need for all those Mullah's, Princes, and Swami's oil.... Bush doesn't need to go swapping spit with the Prince anymore!

Railroads are just one "tool" in the toolbox to deliver oil... I think when we finally see the pipeline infrastructure catch up to the production (5 years ?) you will still see rails as a valuable part of the delivery system- to the sites not on the pipeline...
Until they get those pipelines- rail will be the main way- as they can build those rail loading ports a lot faster then 1500 miles of pipe...
