Back in 1976 there was a pandemic warning about swine flu. All old people were advised to get vaccinated.
We took my mother to get her shot. Some months later, she lost the use of her vocal cords and could only talk at a whisper. Turns out that was caused by the flu shot. The vaccine makers had insisted that the federal government assume the liability for any problems caused by the vaccine.
My mother eventually had her vocal cords replaced with a teflon version, but was given to bouts of severe coughing.
One of those coughing spells eventually killed her about 3 weeks short of her 93rd birthday.
The swine flu never made it to the US
