Fluffy Toilet Paper, Worse for Environment Than Hummers

“This is a product that we use for less than three seconds and the ecological consequences of manufacturing it from trees is enormous,” Hershkowitz told the Guardian newspaper, which cited the chemicals used in pulp manufacturing and process of cutting down forests.

“Future generations are going to look at the way we make toilet paper as one of the greatest excesses of our age," Hershkowitz said. "Making toilet paper from virgin wood is a lot worse than driving Hummers in terms of global warming pollution.”

If the gubment would legalize the production of Hemp, thus allowing paper to be made from it, the farmers in the USA would have a huge market and cash crop to depend on, plus paper could be made much cheaper.

The point of the article is that people could go with recycled, which is not as "fluffy". Just another example of worrying about the environment, but doing something totally different.

Look at all the toilet paper that could be made from the trees that go up in smoke every year, due to the misuse of our forests caused by the wacky liberals.

We have that recycled garbage at work...takes 4 times as much to get the job done as the Charmin Extra Strength we use at home. This job is too critical to trust to inferior products! When used as Kleenex, the recycled stuff will do a fast and effective job of making your nose raw, too.

Use what you want, but I will never buy the recycled.

The Hummers Bill Klinton is used to are the most environmentally friendly of all, and always have a happy ending!

There is a hemp store in Santa Fe. Are all the items imported?

They're probably imported or made here from imported hemp fibers. Industrial hemp grown for fiber contains to little THC (that's the "good stuff" MAN!) to produce any intoxicating effects, however the U.S. doesn't distinguish between the different varieties.

Montana had another bill in the Legislature again this year to allow it to be grown for fiber...Not sure how it is doing with the legislators...I know the medical marijuana law that adds to the amount a prescribed person can possess and expands the disease list was passing the Senate..

We passed a law before- but the State Administration pulled a Bush on it- and never created the rules to allow it....

Montana: SB 261 was passed into law and signed by Gov. Martz on April 23, 2001. The bill authorizes the production of industrial hemp as an agricultural crop, sets up the licensing process; and requires the department of agriculture to request a change in federal law. However the creation of administrative rules for the production of hemp has not been set up as charged by the Montana Legislature.

Hemp is grown in Canada, however it is hard to meet all the regs that go along with it. It is also an extremely hard crop to manage agronomically with the height and strong fibers. Trees are a renewable resource that can be cycled. Especially as fast growing deciduous trees can be used in pulp. They could make soft fluffy stuff without being lily white and use one less process.

A Hemp crop produces nearly 4 ( four) times as much raw fibre as an equivalent-sized tree plantation.

Trees take approximately 20 years to mature. Hemp takes 4 months.

Hemp needs no pesticides because it is unpalatable to insects.

Hemp needs no herbicides because it grows too quickly for any weed to compete.

Hemp paper does not need chlorine bleach, which heavily pollutes rivers near wood-pulp paper mills.

Environmentally-sound Hemp paper is stronger, finer and longer-lasting than wood-based papers. It is naturally acid-free.

Hemp paper is used for bank notes and archives.

Mike if you want seed there is a large grower in Sask that I could get you in contact with, I think. It has been a few years since we looked into it. If you are serious I will see what I can do. PM me in that case.

Thanks, but was joking about seed. They'd open Gitmo back up for me alone if I were to try growing it.

Most of the Hemp is coming from South and Central America. Sure wouldn't want to mess up their monopoly, would we?

A few years ago there was a movement in Nebraska to get it legalized and it failed because our lawmakers just couldn't seperate hemp and marijuana in their minds.

There was a guy in South Dakota that tried to push the law and grew it. The gubment came in and destroyed his patch. Funny thing was, they came in just after it had seeded, and they ended up spreading those seeds everwhere. He had a huge patch the next year and didn't have to plant a seed himself.
