According to media accounts, Tsarnaev and his brother, Tamerlan, were Muslims who recently gravitated to a radical strain of Islam, going so far as to post Anti-American, jihadist videos on social-media sites. Both are thought to have as-yet-unprobed ties to a radical Muslim cleric hellbent on the destruction of the American way of life.
On Thursday night, hours after the radicalized Muslims were fingered by the FBI and their images circulated around the world, they killed a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer and carjacked an SUV from a man who later escaped. The brothers led police on a chase through city streets that included a wild shootout that saw some 200 shots fired and the suspects hurling pipe bombs from the SUV. Bizarrely, police discounted earlier reports that the brothers had robbed a 7/11, saying although it had been robbed, and they had been caught on surveillance video, they were not the robbers.
The pursuit went into Watertown, where Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, was shot several times in the gunfight. But Dzhokhar Tsarnaev somehow slipped away, running over his already wounded brother as he fled by car, according to two law enforcement officials who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
the brothers had already shot an officer in the gunfight..
the brother was shot.. but had run out of ammo,.. as he was walking towards the police, it became clear he had a bomb strapped to himself..
still police tackled him and were handcuffing him when his brother ran at them.. as police scrambled and his brother ran over him killing him..
the police at the gunfight were "transit police" which may explain why they were unable to take control of the scene.
I can see why the city tried to protect those around the running car battle.. but I can't understand how the feds missed their radicalization of these two... especially when they started procuring the stuff to make these numerous bombs and grenades..
The FBI interviewed suspected Boston Marathon bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev in early 2011, it said in a statement late Friday, following a tip from a foreign government that he was “a follower of radical Islam” and was preparing to leave the United States to join underground organizations.
The FBI said its interview two years ago of Mr. Tsarnaev and his family, along with checks of travel records, Internet activity and personal associations, “did not find any terrorism activity” at the time.
well it is clear he left.. why didn't they put him on a watch list?
at least then they could have followed up when all the signs were obvious..
The revelation that the elder Tsarnaev was on U.S. law enforcement authorities’ radar screens seemed likely to raise uncomfortable questions for the Obama administration about whether it could have done anything to detect and stop the plot.
“It’s new information to me and it’s very disturbing that he’s on the FBI radar screen,” said Michael McCaul, Texas Republican Congressman and chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, said on CNN late Friday.
It is not known when the Boston Marathon bombings were planned, or whether there were clues that could have allowed authorities to pre-empt it.
National security and law enforcement authorities said on earlier Friday that they had not turned up any evidence that the Tsarnaevs had contacts with al-Qaeda or other militants overseas.
maybe next time they should actually look at his facebook postings.. :? :???:
