Food Prices Uncertain

Russian drought could push up food prices

Shoppers could see the cost of the meat and poultry in their baskets rise as the price of barley has more than doubled over the past six weeks due to continued fears over the drought affecting Russia and Ukraine.

Russia is the world’s second largest producer of barley after the EU and the cereal crop is used by many farmers as animal feed. The recent price rise could also have a possible knock-on effect on the cost of beer as a significant proportion of the remainder of barley production goes into the brewing trade on both sides of the Atlantic.

Barley is the latest commodity to see a dramatic price rise in recent weeks.

The worst drought for generations in Russia has already caused a 50% jump in the price of wheat, the world’s most-consumed cereal, since June, and last week president Vladimir Putin announced that Russia would freeze grain exports. Attention is also being focused on Australia, the world’s fourth largest exporter of wheat, where this year’s crop may be hit by dry weather in Western Australia, which accounts for 40% of exports. Prices have also been put under pressure by very wet weather in Canada at planting time, which reduced acreage.

Groceries have taken a BIG hike in our little town... I took my receite went to Pierre to Walmart and could justafy my gas and time by the savings I made... I will shop local because I will be there everyday to take our son to school. But in the summer I maybe heading north to shop at Walmart... I asked my hubby to get some milk for me at another little town... Usually he enjoys this and picks up stuff like Little Debbies that I do not buy... He said that groceries where so high there he didn't feel like shopping and only came home with one gallon of milk...... Maybe we shouldn't of sold our nurse cow....

Wal-mart is not the answer for me. I hate the place.
We are so lucky to have a great grocery store in town,
as Wal-mart is 80 miles away. I have had others tell me
that the groceries at Albertsons are of better quality (it's
right across the street from Walmart in Miles City) and
cost no more than Wal-mart.

Golly, I would hate to have to go 80 miles to a grocery store.
Not that I don't pick things up at Miles City Albertsons
when I am in town, I do.

When I was advertising sales manager for our local newspaper,
I know that the manager of the grocery store knew that
Wal-mart and Albertsons was his competition and he sent
people up there to check prices and he did his level best
to keep his prices in line because he needs the locals to shop
with him in order to keep the doors open. Our local store is involved
and supposts the kids, school, sports, local happenings. Wal-mart does
NOTHING in regard to these activities. In fact, our town is so
un-important to Miles City Walmart, we don't even get their sales
flyer.

Good that you will shop locally when you can, katrina. There
is more to it than just the price of groceries, IMO.

We shop at the local grocery. A close friend owns it and we shop the sale adds and beat walmart all over the place in price and service. Besides checkout is ten times as fast.

Had it not been for my back injury, we wouldn't have had to go to Walmart all winter. Now though, the pharmacy ticked me off and we won't be using them anymore. The doc had me on some strong meds and I couldn't function so I asked for something not as potent. The pharmacist said I didn't need anything yet as I had some of the other left. I was mad. The Hostile Native jumped in and lived up to her moniker. That dang pharmacist got my order filled faster than I've ever had one done. Our Albertsons here is so expensive we can't justify shopping there. We both hate shopping so bad that we go to Walmart 3-4 times a year to buy household stuff and staples. Its usually a 3 cart trip that will cost around $1500. Until a couple of weeks ago I hadn't even been in there since Sept. She had got my meds and we use a local grocery store for the things we go thru a lot of. We are lucky though because we raise all of our own meat and most of the veggies. We use a lot of freezer space.
