Study Finds Fox News Viewers Least Informed Of All Viewers

Posted: 05/23/2012 8:32 am Updated: 05/24/2012 11:23 am

Another study has concluded that people who only watch Fox News are less informed than all other news consumers.
Researchers at Fairleigh Dickinson University updated a study they had conducted in late 2011. That study only sampled respondents from New Jersey, where the university is located. This time, the researchers conducted a nationwide poll.

The poll asked questions about international news (Iran, Egypt, Syria and Greece were included) and domestic affairs (Republican primaries, Congress, unemployment and the Keystone XL pipeline.)

The pollsters found that people were usually able to answer 1.8 out of 4 questions on foreign news, and 1.6 of 5 questions on domestic news, and that people who don't watch any news were able to get 1.22 of the questions on domestic policy right.

As the study explained, though, people who watched only Fox News fared worse:

The largest effect is that of Fox News: all else being equal, someone who watched only Fox News would be expected to answer just 1.04 domestic questions correctly -- a figure which is significantly worse than if they had reported watching no media at all. On the other hand, if they listened only to NPR, they would be expected to answer 1.51 questions correctly; viewers of Sunday morning talk shows fare similarly well. And people watching only "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" could answer about 1.42 questions correctly.

Other networks also did badly in some sections; MSNBC viewers and Fox News viewers both fared worse in answering international questions than people who watched no news.

People who only listened to NPR or watched Sunday morning talk shows or "The Daily Show" did the best in the study.

Let me guess this was a LIBERAL LEFT outfit asking for a response that the only right answer had to match their left bias opinion.

Kind of like you Oldtimer polling people about Bush and anyone that doesn't agree with your hate filled crap is wrong.

Did a little research on your study Oldtimer

When Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison, New Jersey, told the world six months ago that it had scientific evidence proving that viewers of the Fox News Channel are less informed than those who watch no news at all, FNC ignored them, even as the report went viral over the Internet.

Not this time.

This month, FDU released another of its PublicMind polls touting that "this nationwide survey confirms initial findings" of ill-informed FNC viewers, and an FNC spokesperson blasted the findings and turned the tables on the university, pointing out that its own students don't exactly measure up academically. (FDU was No. 585 on a Forbes ranking of 650 U.S. colleges.)

"Considering FDU's undergraduate school is ranked as one of the worst in the country," said the FNC spokesperson, "we suggest the school invest in improving its weak academic program instead of spending money on frivolous polling – their student body does not deserve to be so ill-informed."

The new poll from FDU asked 1,185 people to answer five questions about international news events and four about national news. The average person getting their news from FNC answered 1.08 international questions correctly and 1.04 domestic questions correctly, both of which were lower than viewers of "no news."

Viewers of MSNBC scored next to last in international questions (also below "no news") and third to last (ahead of "no news") on the domestic questions.

The study, though, didn't actually identify people who got their news only from one source, so they used "multinomial logistic regression" to create representations of such people who were then compared "to a hypothetical construct of someone who had no recent news exposure."

Dan Cassino, one of the professors of political science at FDU who authored the two studies, acknowledged a hailstorm of criticism (he wrote about it for The Huffington Post) after the first study was released, and he told The Hollywood Reporter it was regrettable so many bloggers focused on the low results of FNC but ignored almost equally low results for MSNBC.

"It was sensationalized – and that's the dominant bias in the media, sensationalism," he said. "MSNBC was second worst, but it wasn't talked about."

And what did you do, you sensationalized the FOX connection in your BIAS title to this thread, totally predictable when it comes to you Oldtimer.

Thanks for telling the "rest of the story," Tam. Old what's his name muffed it again. :)

George Will recently referred to The Donald (Trump) as a "bloviating ignoramus". The definition of "bloviating ignoramus" would be "an extremely ignorant person who speaks pompously".

Looks like it's a spot-on description of Old WhiskeyBreath as well....

Once again oldtimer only post what HE selects and edits to read the way HE wants it to read, Misinformation at its finest     Chalk up another dent in his credibility armor which is almost worn out...

ot is just one of these quirky people who wants antention even if it is negative.

He is doing all he can to draw attention to himself

Fox and MSNBC are opposite sides of the same coin. It is no wonder that the right-wing nut jobs that watch Fox and the left-winged nut jobs that watch MSNBC are uninformed. Seems to be proven here every day. no matter how outlandish a tale told if it paints the president in a bad light it is accepted as gospel truth.

Yep congratulations!!! With your asinine ankle biting drivel you have managed to silence 99% of dissenting opinion.

if you want to know what is goining on in America, read the foriegn press...they at least report on the subject, rather than give it the CNN white wash...

considering they even used the daily show, shows how ill-informed the study was.. :?

if a conservative takes the factual side of an event, and a liberal relies on the emotional side of the same event it is possible to get two accepted answers,... yet only one is factual...

so a liberal university study ran by a liberal professor and a group of liberal students would be looking for an emotional answer.. one that is not factual... so to spin the answers, they use the term "informed" and get the results they wanted..

The first study also came under fire for asking questions where the correct answers may have been ambiguous, and Cassino acknowledged that that may have been the case

To the best of your knowledge, have the opposition groups protesting in Egypt been successful in removing Hosni Mubarak

How about the opposition groups in Syria? Have they been successful in removing Bashar al-Assad?

Some countries in Europe are deeply in debt, and have had to be bailed out by other countries.

To the best of your knowledge, which country has had to spend the most money to bail out European countries?

There have been increasing talks about economic sanctions against Iran. What are these sanctions supposed to do?

Which party has the most seats in the House of Representatives right now?

In December, House Republicans agreed to a short-term extension of a payroll tax cut, but only if President Obama agreed to do what?

It took a long time to get the final results of the Iowa caucuses for Republican candidates. In the end, who was declared the winner?

How about the New Hampshire Primary? Which Republican won that race?

According to official figures, about what percentage of Americans are currently unemployed?

Answers at the time of the survey were:

yes
no
Germany
Dissuade them from pursuing a nuclear program
Republicans
Approval of the Keystone XL Pipeline
Rick Santorum
Mitt Romney
8.1 percent

pretty easy questions.. but then I watch FOX news.. and knew all of topics..

but consider the facts..

The International Monetary Fund has asked its member countries for an extra $500bn in firepower to combat the world's spreading fiscal emergencies, which it estimates will generate demand for bail-out loans totalling $1tn over the next two years.

Eurozone countries last month pledged about $200bn to the IMF, which will count towards the new goal.

so who is picking up the other 800 billion? not Germany...

The IMF uses a quota system to determine how much each member country is obligated to contribute. The United States is by far the biggest donor, contributing nearly 18% to the total, followed by Japan with 6.6% and Germany with 6.1%.

The U.S. has contributed to the "broader effort" to address Europe's debt problems, Geithner said, pointing to steps by the Federal Reserve to make more dollars available to European banks struggling to fund themselves.

well at least most Ron Paul supporters know the facts..

Now we learn that the Fed is indeed in the business of bailing out European banks. It is secretly using a "temporary U.S. dollar liquidity swap arrangement" with the ECB and the central banks of Canada, England, Switzerland and Japan.

"The Fed's latest actions in cooperating with foreign central banks to undertake liquidity swaps of dollars for foreign currencies is another reason why Congress needs enhanced power to oversee and audit the Fed," writes Ron Paul. "Under current law Congress cannot examine these types of agreements.

so OT is Germany the "correct" answer for the informed?

can you explain how they study came up with the results?

it is really simple.. instead of facts or exact numbers it allows assumed variables to be used, irrelevant ones at that... ... it relies on the assumption of independence of irrelevant alternatives

so if the set up question is which news source do you rely on the most.. / least.. you can get answers such as The daily show.. and Saturday night live.. or Jay Leno.. since you're not looking for Saturday night live or Jay Leno those are the substituted for another assumed variable. and the daily show becomes the most relied upon news source.. as both least and most could be counted towards relied upon..

if a person answered IMF they could insert/assume doesn't know...
and say the answer was ill-informed,.. which is the furthest from the truth..

You of course bull humper are the remaining 1%????

Of course that is not saying much for the dissenting opinion at all..

Face it Bullhauler the 99% that have left, did so because at least they were smart enough to realize they couldn't defend Obama's actions without looking like they are too stupid to see through his crap.

The man keeps claiming he inherited a horrible economy from the Republicans but anyone that knows how the Federal Government works knows the Congress writes the spending bills and the DEMOCRATS had control of the Congress and Senate for the last two years of Bush's Administration. If they wanted to stop Bush they had the power to do so but they didn't. They didn't stop the out of control spending when Obama took over either. They kicked it up a couple notches hence the $5 trillion more in NATIONAL DEBT in the first three years of Obama that Democrats don't want to speak about.
Obama claimed the debt ceiling raises under Bush was because of Bush's lack of leadership, so what is Obama blaming his debt ceiling raises on, THE REPUBLICANS when the republicans had no way of stopping anything the idiot wanted as he had a majority in the House and a filibuster proof Senate. Who Bullhauler are the ones trying to SLOW DOWN Obama's spending spree to pay back his donors now that the voters handed Obama his head on a platter in the midterms with the largest Democrat lose in history? THE REPUBLICANS.

The only things Obama has done in three years is rack up unbelievable debt weakening the US economy that is going to take decades to over come if they ever can. He claims he has an all of the above energy policy and everyone is starting to figure that one out to be "All of the Above Ground Energy sources and be damned oil, coal and natural gas. He claims he wants energy independence and to create jobs and then he veto's a pipeline that will provide oil from a FRIENDLY country verses a dictator lead enemy state. A pipeline that will provide thousands of US jobs giving US citizens independence of Obama's government handouts. He claims he wants energy independence then regulates the coal industry into bankrupcy.

He passed a Healthcare Bill that is being taken up in the Courts as it violates the US Constitution and a large majority of Americans want repealed. He calls this Healthcare bill his signature bill but have you heard him campaigning for re-election using his "SIGNATURE" bill? No because he knows just how wrong he was and when the full truth of the bill is realized I doubt it will be anymore liked.

He has weakened the US foreign affairs reputation no matter what he thinks his apology tours have done . There are three foreign messes on Obama's hands right now and no amount of blaming the Republicans is going to clear him of them. Iran citizens asked for help and Obama stood by and allowed that regime to hold control and now they are thumbing their noses at the US and her Allies by building nukes under protest from everyone with a half a brain . Second, you have Syria that Obama has done nothing about. He entered other countries on humanitarian reasons without permission of the Congress but he sits by allowing Syria to slaughter their citizens by the thousands. Then you have the Doctor in Pakistan, that helped the Obama Administration get intel on the where abouts of Bin Laden so Obama could continuely spike the ball over killing him, sitting in a Pakistan Prison for the next 33 years for his efforts. Pakistan was an ally but Obama's drone attacks killing innocent Pakistan citizens and the Seals entering that country without their permission to kill Bin Laden has turned that Country into a nightmare. Add to that the fact he told the Taliban and Al Queada if they can stay hidden a little longer the US will pull out all their troops and it will be safe again for them to roam the streets of Afganistan and kill more innocent people and plan further attacks on the US. Face it the guy is an idiot and those that left did so because they find it very hard to hold a straight face while trying to defend him.

Gee how could I forget maybe the reason your 99% left is they are sick of seeing their country sinking into a swamp of debt while watching Obama playing golfing, playing basketball, going on expensive vacations and jet setting to California to laugh it up with Late Night Fun men. Take your pick Bullhauler.

Just what in the hell do you think you are accomplishing ranting on a jerk-water forum where your posts will be read by less than fifty people???
