Free Clothes

Drove by a small town on the edge of the Pine Ridge Rez today, and unfortunately didn't have a camera. A semi load of clothes had been dumped, and have been sitting in the rain for a few days I would estimate. Years ago when my grandparents lived and ranched up around Wounded Knee district, that would happen from time to time. A semi load of clothes would get dumped in town, and most of them would then finally get dumped into the bottom of a canyon, but I'm sure someone back East got a big tax write-off at least.

I am told that most of the clothes that is sent to the Rez is fancy clothes not usually worn in this part of the country. O, there must be some that are wearable, and a little more style would be better than the size XXL black tee shirts that seem so common, but a large part of the clothes sent are far out for this part of the world.

So they didn't even coordinate the "donation" with anyone? They just dumped them?
You're saying that dumping isn't a form of coordination?

Were these used clothes? Who were the intended recipients?
I know that occasionally there are some new jackets and stuff. Maybe Martin Jr. has some more info, but it looks like an ongoing conspiracy to get the Oglala to wear polyester.

I don't have a lot of information on the clothes, but know that for many years clothes were sent to St. Francis Mission on the Rosebud and the church had them in a building were they could be sorted through. Many were unwanted and were discarded in the dump. I had understood that they came from eastern U.S. A tax break could have been part of the incentive to donate them. I suppose the same thing happened at the Pine Ridge Rez west of here.

I think Rosebud and Pine Ridge should have a "community organizer". There ought to be one available long about the end of January, 2013.

Aside from the smartazzed replies.....most of the problem comes from the clothes not being suited for the area.

Here, the Boundary has received prom dresses by the hundreds, silk long sleeved ' disco' style shirts from the 80's that were delivered in the '90's and the like.

Once a load of bathing suits, cover ups, etc was shipped here in DECEMBER!!!

People are just trying to dump their extra clothes and get a write off.....there is no concern for the people on the receiving end of them.

For the most part, I don't think anyone is getting a tax write-off from the old clothing that are brought to the Indian Reservations. They are just older or out dated clothe they want a place for. I think a lot of these clothe do get used so it is of some benefit.

I suppose there are times when a truck load of clothe arrive when there is no one to receive them, if that happens all a truck driver can do is dump them and let someone pick through them.

There is a dress code on the reservation, whatever that may be. Most like to dress somewhat alike. I just don't like to see men and boys wearing Tee-shirts and baggy pollyester shorts then expecting to find work.

Heck, I don't blame the Indian if he would prefer to buy his clothing from Young's Western Wear then to pick them up from rummage.
