DENVER (CBS4) ― The City of Denver has been working to make sure everything is in tip-top shape for all the visitors coming to town for the Democratic National Convention, and now a local salon is helping in that effort.

It seems to be a first -- don't move the homeless, clean them up. That was the work of one salon and the recipients didn't even seem to care if the Democrats were coming to town. Sly's Salon at 17th and Grant was offering free haircuts to the homeless Monday.

"To give them haircuts and make them all spiffed up for the Democratic National Convention, because they are part of our community as well," said Ghandia Gohnson, co-owner of Sly's Salon.

Rusty Johnson hasn't had a haircut in three-to-four months. He said his appearance during the convention made no difference to him.

"I just want to look good and feel good for myself, that's all," Johnson said.

Free medical checks were provided and a bit of food to make the day even better.

Nancy Kohfahl said she became homeless after becoming a victim of domestic abuse. She didn't care that the Democrats were coming to Denver. She said it was a chance to get back on her feet.

"I wanted to look good for Nancy and now I do," Kohfahl said. "I'm looking for a job interview and a job and to get off the homeless streets of Denver."

It makes the homeless people feel better and those giving the haircuts as well.

"It's a heart-felt reward to give to the community and get it back," Kohfahl said.

The free haircut coupons were distributed through Denver Human Services.

Now they are making a third call up NG troops for the convention. Getting deeper and deeper in their call ups by the day. They are even making pleas for EMS personnel.

First hand info. A friend in the NG and a friend that is the head of the local EMS.

They are not advertising in the paper for help. They had a big protest when the protestors found they turned a big warehouse into a detention facility That was on the Denver news TV feed.

The Grand Junction Colo NG was I believe the last call up. we'll see if there is more. They have acquired facilities at the National Western to house the NG

Hide your head in the sand that way your beloved socialist liberal friends are still on the pedestal you put them. I could care less whether a deputy dog PIG believes me or not. I will take words of a NG member over you and your socilist buddies anyday.

Sorry that you are mistaken, I have never supported the sherriff in ways you imply. I have many friends who are cops. Then there are some people that condemn the military sacrifices fir theirown personal agenda, those are the ones that I have a problem with and deserve no respect.

The homeless are in all big cities. IMO many are homeless because thats how they want to be. Once I read where a homeless person was given an apartment with everything furnished for 6 mo. all free of charge by a good samaritan. The homeless person left in just a matter of weeks.

Larry- my Dad was a disabled WWII veteran-who died a premature death because of his injuries- my uncles were WWII veterans- many of my friends are Vietnam veterans and some died over there...I am the last to condemn any veterans...At the same time I am also the last to say that just because any of them were vets makes them Presidential material..

I just finished reading a very fine 3 page story in our local newspaper- about one of our local vets who was captured 3 days after D-Day and spent the rest of the war in a German prisoner of war camp..He was a very good friend of my Dads- and served on his honor guard at his funeral...The story goes thru all his suffering - his sacrifices- his struggles to survive....And while he is a very fine- and very smart person- I don't think he would make a good President just because he sat in a prison camp...

I heard an interesting comments made yesterday by Jack Cafferty...He commented how when we were running up to war in Iraq- if anyone questioned the actions or the intents- they were slammed for being nonpatriotic...Like he said- now it looks like more should have been asking questions....

When the Congress was steamrolling the FISA and Military Powers Act thru Congress- if anyone questioned the actions or intents-- they were slammed for being nonpatrtiotic...Now after time has past- and we see the Constitutional rights that were usurped- most agree more should have questioned it.....

And now with McCain running on the stand of his military and POW status giving him leadership experience- and commander in chief abilities- if anyone questions that military experience- they are slammed for being nonpatriotic.. :???:

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."

OK if you support the veterans I will take your word for it. Your posts do come across as condemning McCains military service and if I sense that the case I will get defensive real fast. If you want to condemn McCain I have no problem with a person stating where they disagree, heck I even diagree with him on many things. You are also right that a veteran is no the only qualifications to be President. Where I think mC has some strength is that most veterans will stay out of a war if at all possibile. They have seen the worst and do not want anyone else unduly subjected to this but at the same time have the courage to say enough is enough.
