Moo north. We may not know when the cows will come home, but we do know which way they'll face when they get there. A survey of Google Earth images of cattle herds worldwide reveals that the animals nose toward magnetic north about two-thirds of the time, researchers report online 25 August in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. An examination of deer herds in the Czech Republic gave similar results. Unlike birds, which use magnetic fields for navigation, it's not clear how the ability to perceive magnetic fields benefits the mammals. It could help orient them in grassy fields with few significant landmarks, the researchers say. (Photo: Hynek Burda/Universitaet Duisburg-Essen)
