Funny shaped abcess on yrlg.

We brought in about 100 yrlngs yesterday, and noticed one had a huge tubelike abcess under her hide. It started near her backbone just ahead of her hip and rand forward and down at a slight angle along her ribs. The abcess was about 2 feet long, 6" wide, and stuck up 5 or 6 inches. We ran her into the chute and I lanced the thing on the low end. Once I had it emptied out a bit I could feel the offending sliver and realized I'd have to open the hole a bit more, then to my surprise I pulled out a spruce snag about 2" in dia. and about 18" long. It looked like the entry wound was nearly healed over, so I guess she'd been packing that thing for a week or two. It didn't appear to be bothering her anymore, but I've never seen anything like it. I cussed myself out for not having my camera with me though.

Yeah those snags are a bad deal-my buddy lost a good ranch gelding last summer ran one into his belly riding down a bush trail. My neighber had a bull 'Bobbit' himself with one a few years back too. It's amazing how tough cattle can be sometimes.
