Ya know what's funny? Seeing the conservative talking heads telling us that the US is a "right center" country after voters just elected the "most Liberal Senator in Congress" (according to McCain). Now that's funny!

And, according to Politico.com:

Sixty-six percent of voters under age 30 preferred Barack Obama to John McCain's 32 percent.

ALL voters in that age range, regardless of race, religion, gender. That has to scare the pants off the Republican Party establishment. :D

In other words, his votes came from the segment of the population with the least amount of life experience, IE dumb kids. Yeah, that's something to hang your hat on, frankie.

Ah, those comforting old sayings. Too bad they often don't hold up:

There is a significant possibility that if you lock in young voters for the first time, you can hold on to them for the rest of their lives,” said Peter Levine, director of the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement at Tufts University in Massachusetts. “It depends on President Obama’s performance in the White House, but the precedent is when the person is young, they do tend to stick with that party.”

Well, the phrases "significant possibly" and "they tend to" tells me that Mr. Levine doesn't have any good research to back up his claim. But I'm gonna assume it's true because it makes sense.

Now the question is will they continue to vote? Statistics show that people in the 18-30 range usually turn out in very low numbers. Yes, they turned out in record numbers this time, but Obama's candidacy was different than most. Trot out another boring white guy like Gore, Kerry, or McCain for that matter, and they probably won't feel so inclined to make the effort.

There are other research organizations who have come up with the same results: that whichever party a person votes in for the first time is usually the party they stay with. Even if only half of that 66% stay with the Dems, it makes a hard row for Republicans to hoe to get back a majority.

This was a unique election, Obama a unique candidate. I can't imagine that so many people will be energized to come out at the next election as this one. A black president will no longer be something to celebrate. It'll either be "normal" or an unsuccessful one.

I really believe anger at Bush drove a lot of people to the polls. Fear about their financial future drove others. In the end, Obama's race was apparently sort of a footnote to most voters. So what will drive them in 2012? We'll see, I guess.

I think one thing most of us on this board discounted was Obama's "community organizer" experience. I read an article recently about community organizers, in general, and it's pretty impressive how they can gather volunteers to push a particular agenda. There's no secret to it; it's just long hours, hard work, and getting the right people, committed people, in the right slots.

Ah, but sometimes they do.

Although it is not true that all conservatives are stupid people, it is true that most stupid people are conservative.

Why right here on this forum, we have principled, intelligent conservatives like VanC that represent the former.

And we have Jigs, Larrry, and anyone with Sand in their name representing the latter.

I'm not the one who voted for a lying Socialist with no qualifications and a closet full of skeletons - and apparently no US birth certificate.

I'd rather be called stupid by a dumb butt liberal than be a dumb butt liberal! :D Atleast "stupid" conservatives have morals and principles that don't change with the breeze. And with all the hot air on here some of ya'll create your own breeze! Breezy like a cat 17 hurricane!

As I said, it makes sense, but the question is not so much who they would vote for if they voted, but whether they will make the effort to vote in the first place. Not everybody takes their government as seriouly as we do.

Hard as I try, I can't find anything to dispute here.

Amazing what organization and dedication can do. Obama's people had it, McCain's didn't. It can make the seemingly impossible possible. Who could have possibly predicted this four years or even a few months ago? The irony is that many people, including me, derided Obama's experience as a community organizer, while that ends up being a huge factor in his victory. I still don't like the outcome, but I sure hope I was wrong about him. Either way, it's a truly amazing story.

Thanks for the compliment. Some would call me wishy-washy, but screw them. It's never easy to see things from the other side, and sometimes it's downright impossible, but I try. There are some things I can compromise on for the greater good and there are some things I cannot, which I suppose is true of most people. People that are never willing to compromise are dangerous, IMO.

Hmmm...I can go with that.
