The Department of Animal and Range Sciences, North Dakota State University, Fargo invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in meat science and muscle biology, available July, 2006. The successful candidate will conduct research in the area of muscle biology. Scientists with interests in cellular and molecular regulation of muscle development and muscle biochemistry are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a research program in the area of fundamental aspects of muscle growth and biology. Specific research areas may include cellular and molecular controls of muscle growth and development and muscle biochemistry as they relate to meat quality, taste, tenderness, and associated desirable consumer traits, with specific emphasis on beef. The candidate will be expected to establish a vigorous externally funded research program and to teach and advise both undergraduate and graduate students. This position is part of the NDSU Beef Systems-Center of Excellence. Collaboration is expected both within the Center and across disciplinary and departmental lines. Potential collaborative activities may include scientists in the Department of Animal and Range Sciences, the Center for Nutrition and Pregnancy, and the Great Plains Institute of Food Safety, as well as other scientists involved with cellular and molecular biology programs at the university.
Required Qualifications:
• Earned Ph.D. degree by appointment date in Meat Science, Animal Science, or a closely related field, with an emphasis in meat science or muscle biology.
• Experience in various laboratory techniques related to aspects of muscle biology at the tissue, cellular, and/or molecular level.
• Extensive knowledge of the application of basic science to solve problems related to meat quality and improve consumer acceptance of meat products.
• Working knowledge of the meat processing industry.
• Ability to gain extramural grant funds to support the research programs.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Commitment to work in a team setting, collaborate across disciplines, and desire to work in an innovative and creative research and teaching program.
• Experience teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Work experience in research and development within the food industry.
• Post-doctoral experience related to meat science or muscle biology.
• Working knowledge of the land grant university system.
