GAO backs Boeing's protest over tanker award

By Christopher Hinton, MarketWatch
Last update: 4:23 p.m. EDT June 18, 2008NEW YORK (MarketWatch) --

The Government Accountability Office on Wednesday backed Boeing Co.'s protest against the U.S. Air Force and its award of a $35 billion contract to Northrop Grumman (and built by foreign owned Airbus unit of EADS) to begin replacing its Eisenhower-era Stratotankers.

In a statement, the GAO said that the Air Force should reopen its bidding process and reimburse Boeing for the costs of filing and pursuing the protest, including reasonable attorney fees.

The Air Force said that that it would review the GAO ruling and comment further at a later time. Nonetheless, most analysts have said the Air Force will abide by the ruling, pushing out the contract award by at least another year.

This is a good thing. Now maybe Boeing will actually be competitive in the next bid. Their crooked shenanigans of the past maybe will come to an end.

By the way, the GAO findings are not binding and the Air Force may or may not re-open the bid.

My governor says this all about Union labor and Union donations to the Democrats in Washington.

I know putting America first is against the new neocon globalist ideology--but I would much rather have US Union workers doing the job and getting our US taxdollars, than French or German Union workers- and US Companies profitting than the European Countries/Companies that own Airbus- and more of our taxpayer money going overseas....

The same amount of American labor will go into each tanker. Both will be assembled in the USA and both with some out of country parts.

Several of McCain's top campaign people were lobbyist for EADS when they won the tanker contract.

I guess maybe he should have lobbied for EADS to get the border surveillance system going too.

Boeing for sure has royally screwed that one up after the millions invested. Guess what? It doesn't work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
