Washington State University has received a $35 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to put toward a building that will be the centerpiece of the university's new School for Global Animal Health.
The school focuses on the relationships between global animal health and public health. In particular, it is researching vaccines for animals, especially livestock in less-developed countries.
Researchers also are exploring emerging pathogen and disease detection and control of disease transmission from animals to humans.
The Gates grant is the largest single private financial commitment in the school's history. It will help pay for a new, 20,000-square-foot building on WSU's Pullman campus that will house office, meeting and research space.
