Global warming

This is not meant to be a thread about whether there is, or is not, global warming taking place. I was just thinking lately about how the 2000's have definately been warmer (and drier) on average here in this area. We have had big snow storms, and very cold temps. for short times, but as a rule, we have had hot summers, and warmer than average winters. And less snow than average in our winters lately.

Anyone have anything other to report?

Surprisingly nippy here today. You couldnt see your breath or anything but you were just frozen from the inside out. I went out to feed and my hair was soaking wet. The moisture in the air was insane today and it left a layer of ice on everything. I prefer the dey cold to this anyday. Brrr..

I think if you went back and checked on the past cycles, we are probably pretty much on track. I remember warm winters and cold summers in the past. All though, they say we were driest ever on record. But they've only kept records for 100 years or so and that really isn't much time in the whole scheme of things.

Maybe we are in global warming, but it wasn't too long ago when they said we were in for another ice age. I don't think anyone really knows and what if it does change? Ranchers have always prayed for the best and expected the worse. At least the ones who are still ranching, that is.

Seems like anytime you hear the news or articles they always say it is the Driest or hottest Since a certain time in history. There is always a dryer or hotter time back in history. I think it is all just a cycle you look at Midwest they will say it is driest and warmest since the Dust bowl days. Always been warmer and colder times in history.

Well we don't have any snow at all which is'nt normal but I hate snow so I'M HAPPY . I can remember a summer when it was only in the 40's on the 4th of july,About 5 years ago it rained most all summer even the good ranchers did'nt get their haying done early that year.3 summer's ago my corn froze on August 19th.

Do any of you remember the winters in 95 or 96 we had livestock trailers to deliver in the Dakota's some of them took weeks to find a clear day or two so we could deliver them.I also spent 3 days trying to make it from Dickenson ND to Fargo and it was cold we stayed in the Super 8 motel in Dickenson and the room next to ours the toilet froze and busted. In the early 70's we had so much snow you could build huge forts inside the drifts, early 80's we were burning off low ground meadows during christmas vacation. The old timers say we get a drought here about every 10 years our last one was in 1988 and then this summer so we were do.Both ended with a decent fall and plenty of regrowth grass many people here are still grazeing hay meadows which is unheard of here on a normal year.

The local NOAA weather boys say that for our area we are now the 6th warmest year since they began keeping records in the late 1800's--and that with the forecasted above normal temps for the rest of the month, we could break the all time record for the warmest year...

Even Polaski today said that it isn't looking optomistic for a white Christmas :)

And they are still predicting that El Nino will give us an above normal temp winter... :) :) :)

Weather channel today predicted that most of the northern half of the US has a more than good chance of havin a white Christmas.

boy am I glad I live in the other half LOL

They changed that on us lately lilly. Now they are saying that we could get clipped by the BIG storm that is prowling through the SW right now. Just a day or so ago, we weren't supposed to have a chance of a white Christmas.

They are saying that places in Nebraska could get a foot of snow. But it is still far enough out that they will probably change that a few times by the time the storm gets wound up.

I like it brown for Christmas. Thats all I want this year.

I am full of thanks we have about 2 feet of snow. It's a life saver. Sure am glad I live up here, not where folks don't get snow. Yuk.
November here was a bit nippy, lots of 40 below, but Dec. has been too warm at times, +5C (about 40F) today. I hate to see it above zero at this time of year as it tends to create a crust on the snow that makes it hard for the horses to paw for grass. And if it bares off enough alfalfa tends to winter kill. Plus it's nice to keep as much snow til spring as possible to fill up dugouts and replenish the land.
So... heres hoping for a mediocre rest of winter!

Its funny last night on the late night Canadian news, they said it looks like its going to be a brown Christmas for Canada :???: I'm really not surprised they would say that because the East always seems to forget theres a western part of Canada. This year we have record amounts of snow.....its been years since we've had this much snow.

Going sliegh riding with Chad Harden

Gonna be a green Christmas here. Everything has started to bud. It's just wacky! And yes it is STILL raining.
It's the erie fog that's freakin me out. I would love to see the sun for a few seconds.
I have to laugh when I see that we have "sun" on the news. havent seen the darn thing in weeks, yet the TV says we have lots of it  Guess the news folk don't poke there heads out of the studio! We had a dusting of snow in Langley yesterday

Well we have the strangest weather here in a long time. Three weeks ago we had 1 1/2- 2 feet of snow and it looked a lot like Christmas. Things were froze up and the cows were clean.

Now for the past week or two we have had temps up to 10C. and went from mud to solid dry ground with a few dandelions popping flowers just east of us.

Just weird for December. Sure notice the cows needing less feed but more bedding!

Do you guys feed your cows in a lot all winter?

I never put out bedding for cows just unroll hay and there is always some rank hay they wont eat.We try to work the cows across all the hayfields spreading manure as we go.

Well first of all, we do not have the big herds like you guys do out your way. So housing a herd is less of an issue for us. Lots of herds from 30 to 150 cows. More mixed farming.

Some guys have a piece of bush or a gravel ridge on which they winter their cows. My problem is that I don't have any rough land to run my cows on when the weather turns warm.

So with the melting we have had recently, eveything turns to mud. They just cut the fields to mud and in the spring, the grass is ruined.

So I bring them into the yard to feed them and they get their water in the barn. So it takes straw or sawdust to keep them kinda half clean and dry. Makes for a lot of work and manure to haul.

The best scenario is a steady temp. about -15C., which we often get in Jan./ Feb. Then they get fed in the field and sleep on the snow. Almost no work at all that way.

But this is southern Ontario which means up and down temps. all winter.

I remember the news reports in the 60's with the enormous snow storms in Europe, they were definitly touting the new ice age then. Whatever the truth, the greater awareness we have of the environmental degradation as a result of these 'scares' has led to better land management over the last 30-40 years.
