GOP sunk In 06- Hillary Wins in 08

While I was in town today I voted absentee because it sounds like I'm going to be busy on the 7th...Got me to thinking what may happen...I'm not as optomistic as Mehlman- as I think the Republicans will lose across the board in Congress- but I also don't agree with Morris that Hillary will win in 08 (God help us  )....

I'm going to go with the electoral-vote.com website poll (that was almost dead on in 04)- and giving the Republicans the ties and tossups- my prediction is that the Senate will end up being split 50-50, but the House will go to the Democrats 225-210....And it will be a long next two years with little getting accomplished....

RNC's Ken Mehlman: GOP Can Hold Congress
Ronald Kessler
Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2006

WASHINGTON -- Despite what he called the toughest challenge Republicans face since they took control of Congress in 1994, Ken Mehlman, chairman of the Republican National Committee, said he believes the GOP will retain control of both the House and the Senate in the November elections.

Dick Morris Says GOP Sunk in '06, Hillary Wins in '08

The GOP is [rearranging] "deckchairs on the Titanic," and single women will propel Hillary Clinton to the White House in 2008, says political analyst Dick Morris.

Republicans are watching their base shrink dramatically in the wake of the Mark Foley scandal, said Morris, appearing on "Your World" with Neil Cavuto.

Heard on the radio today that Barack Obama is gaining steam for a run at the Dem nomination. I actually think it will be more fun if they ultimately choose Hillary to run for Pres.

Its odd... Obama wom Illinois Senete set that Fitgerald vacated because he was tired of the BS by an absolute landslide (what a disgrace the Illinois republican party is) but I didn't even know who he was until almost election day.... Didn't campaingn at all out here but really didn't have to. The republican who won the primary stepped down after it was reported that he tried to get his wife (actress Jeri Ryan) to go to sex clubs with him and that he had some interesting... interests... Than they almost had Mike Ditka run against him, yes, the former coach of the Chicago Bears but he didn't want to release his financial info so they got Allen Keyes from Maryland to run. It was terrible.. I wonder how Obama will be viewed in a national race... He is fairly middle of the road on a lot of things but I wonder if he is :liberal" enough to garner enough support in his own party.. And if he goes far left to get that support will he than alienate the middle of the road folks? 2 years is a long ways away, it will be interesting.

NOw the Democart Governor is being investigated left and right and his chief fundraiser has been indiated but the party is in such disarray after former Illinois Governer George Ryan's curropt tenor that has landed him in jail that his opponnent can't make any headway... Just a poorly organized group with no rising stars that I know of...

This Foley scandal is going to really bite the republicans in the butt... than and other things but this was just another straw on a very weak camels back

I guess it worked , now I need to know how to edit what I've already said.

Come to think of it, it would be handy to have that ability even off of the net.

There should be more to politics than the framing both sides do. If Obama breaks those barriers, it would be a good thing.

The only thing worse than a democrat is a bad/corrupt republican.

I have always voted republican and will again, but---

If the republicans lose their majority in November it will be their own damn fault.

They have made no effort to control government spending. They outspend the worst democrats.

The have made no real effort to purge corruption from their members. When Joel Hefley tried to reprimand DeLay for hanky-panky, he was booted off the House ethics committee. Ney, Cunningham, Foley, etc.

We are in a war in Iraq and they have no plan either to win it or get out.

They had no clue as to what the aftermath of the war was going to be. The war lasted 30 days, but almost four years later we are still there. We were in WWII for 44 months. November 1st will mark the 44th month of this war.

The only reason I will again vote Republican is that the Democrats have nothing but whining and carping. If they would put together a CREDIBLE PLAN, they would be a shoo-in - like the Republicans were in 1994.

The Contract with America is dead, Republican zeal to control spending is dead. Unless they change, the party will become a minority party until the Democrats screw up even worse.

I'm an Independent- but vote mainly conservative and Republican, but I agree- their failure to support states rights (which used to be a big Republican platform issue) and giving almost unheard of powers to the Federal Government ( while taking away more states rights) in the name of the Patriot Act- along with putting more and more Federal restrictions on American Citizens while doing absolutely nothing but doubletalk to shut down the immigrant/terrorist problems of the southern border have alienated many, including many of the most conservative....

Then the undying uncontrolled backing of Big Business- while this same Big Business is shipping jobs and investments overseas has lost them the Reagan Democrats (independents) that elected Reagan and helped bring the Bush's and Republican Congress into office...Many of them aren't seeing the same great economy that is being professed in all the facts, figures, and numbers being released....Apparently the trickle down theory hasn't got to them yet- or is not working...

And now the campaign scandals and Foley scandal are even losing them support from some of the radical Christian right wing along with those that thought of the party as the conservative law and order party....

Good post Oldtimer, BTW are you seeing/reaping the results of this great "economic boom" ??? At the risk of being called anti-corporate, I blieve the majority of the "excess" is being concentrated at the top. Our local manufacturing plant here is on strike and the big disagreement stems from the fact that the workers aren't willing to accept any cuts in their benefits-salary,etc. I always have to wonder, How much the CEOs are going to cut their benefit/salary package for the Company's betterment????

Nope it ain't trickled down here yet- but we're kind of at the end of the creek here anyway....

Town and county are dying- stores closing daily- main part of town sitting with numerous empty buildings-- and you know its getting bad when some of the bars are shutting their doors....Most the kids have to leave the area or the state to find a decent job...The fastest growing and probably highest paying industry around now is in Geriatric care- with schools being torn down and replaced by assisted living centers....The only hopes of a viable business or industry in the planning is to build a 130 bed jail/prison with the hopes of contracting out jail space to the feds, other counties, and out of state...Headlines of the local paper a couple weeks ago were about the fact that the Border Patrol/Immigration had picked our county to receive one of their satellite Border Protection offices which would mean 6 more permanent federal jobs- article went on to relate how much it could mean to the economy to have 6 more federal paid families...

Even with the out of sight oil prices- the boom really hasn't affected us that much- as the local oil companies and drillers are still only getting paid about $35 barrel, because they can't get space on the pipeline which is reserved for the $70+ Canadian oil :???: So they are still only doing limited production and exploration...

I think the average salary of our county is around $20,000- with many of the neighboring counties well under that- 9 of the 56 counties are listed in the lowest 50 counties salaries of the nation:

http://trac.syr.edu/tracirs/findings/aboutTP/tables/botavewag04.html

I also don't think the folks sitting in D.C. see how much this cost of fuel/energy is affecting the country- with prices on everything from necessities to luxury items increasing greatly because of the transportation costs- which again we probably see more of because we are so far from everything...When you have to drive 600 miles round trip for medical care, see the cost of all food and clothing raising, and see the price of the products you raised- cattle, wheat, and hay going down because of the same freight costs- it sinks in a little more....Even the beer distributors raised the prices of beer because of freight- making the water holes raise their prices- despicable

I just think that many of those old fogies that have been sitting in D.C. for 15-20 years have lost sight of what is actually going on- as if some ever did know .... and I don't know how they're floating the figures and fixing the books to say there is little or no inflation :???:

my prediction is that the Senate will end up being split 50-50, but the House will go to the Democrats 225-210....

I had to go back and see how close I was with my prediction--Looks like I underestimated the voter disaproval of the way the country is heading by more than I thought....

As it appears now that the actual makeups will probably end up with

Senate: 49 Dems - 49 Repubs with 2 Liberals that will caucus with the Dems....

House: 232 Dems 203 Repubs

I heard old John ain't going to carry thru with his suicide threat   In fact this is his story today:

WASHINGTON — Sen. John McCain, considered the front-runner for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination, intends to launch an exploratory committee next week, GOP officials said Friday.

John McCain: Suicide if Dems Win

By Jim Roberts
Oct 19, 2006

John McCain joked on Wednesday he would "commit suicide" if Democrats win the Senate in November. McCain one of the frontrunners for the GOP nomination for president in 2008, was on a visit to Iowa to campaign for Republican congressional candidates when he made the off the cuff remark.

When asked for his reaction to a potential Democratic takeover of the Senate in the November 7 elections McCain had a snappy response.

"I think I'd just commit suicide," McCain told reporters, to accompanying laughter from Republicans standing with him. "I don't want to face that eventuality because I don't think it's going to happen."

***

"I think it's going to be tough, but I think we'll do OK," McCain said of Republican prospects. Democrats must pick up six seats in the Senate and 15 seats in the House of Representatives to win control of both chambers.
