I screwed up . TAM write that down. Kaiser was wrong and admitted it.

Bos Taurus - not Bos Indicus

And I will apologize ahead of time for running down those wonderful flychaser off ers. Never ate any so I should not be so judgemental.

It's OK Randy, it wasn't a fatal screw up. The only USDA certified "Guaranteed Tender" branded beef program requires Bos Indicus influenced cattle. (That is a money back guarantee and with very little pay out). They get about the same rate of carcass acceptance as CAB...the number one reason for non-acceptance is the dang things grade Choice!!!!!!!!! Quality cattle make quality beef!

I have never been one to run down any beef breed and should have caught myself on that one. You are right about Quality cattle Quality beef. More type than breed in that statement. Virtually no Bos Indicus up here in the Great White North, and those that I have seen would truly not be an example to be judging from.

Choice eh. Might have to build myself a great big heated barn and try a few of those beasts up here next to my igloo.

I have used Santa Gertudis, Watusi and Brangus before I went to using straight Angus. They all had their good points but i like what i have now better. They served their purpose. Except the Brangus, they just gave me calving problem.

Brangus cross work well down in Texas. They give that little bit of heat tolerance but it depends on the line as you know for EPDs.

I have had some that were pretty hard to work with. I had a couple of pretty big calves that jumped from a standing position over our working wood fence that was over 4 feet tall. Pretty hard to work with some of those high strung cattle but they fed out well through the winter.

Randy, my computer's been down for a while...virus protection wouldn't let it talk to the internet...guess it saw ranchers.net as a "big, bad virus".

Breed should fit the environment...Taurus up there...a little Indicus blood down here. Adaptation to your environment is why you have an advantage in Choice/Prime. I think every breed trying to turn their cattle black(single trait selection) is part of the reason for reduction in carcasses grading...using a bull just because he's black. Type, good disposition, and good health is what makes quality beef...and excess corn/barley hides the bad ones.

Econ, those well fed, high strung cattle are the ones that make the tough choice steaks!! :?

They were high strung like that until I broke them in. I believe what you say about keeping cattle content and calm to produce good meat. After working with them (spending time with them) they usually all settle down and do their job here on earth. The fatter and more content they are, the less high strung they are. These were young calves I bought that had very large frames. I think they were probably being weaned by me and I don't really like to have to do that when I buy them.
