U.S. to New Jersey: You Owe Us $270M
Published November 09, 2010 | Reuters
The Obama administration wants prompt repayment of more than $270 million in federal grant money dedicated to New Jersey for a rail tunnel to Manhattan that became a political flashpoint when the state withdrew from the project.
In a letter sent on Monday to New Jersey Transit Executive Director James Weinstein, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA: 25.49 ,0.00 ,0.00%) said the state "must immediately repay all the federal assistance" spent so far on the project canceled by Gov. Chris Christie due to costs.
This includes $271 million, plus interest and penalties, that already had been sent to the state. In addition, FTA is canceling nearly $80 million in funds that were scheduled to be delivered.
The Obama administration had promised a total of $3 billion in financing for the commuter rail project, which would have become the nation's largest public works undertaking. The state and the New York and New Jersey Port Authority were also going to put up funds.
The tunnel between New Jersey and Manhattan became a charged symbol during the just-completed congressional elections of Democratic efforts to stimulate the economy and Republican aims to cut spending.
Christie said in October that New Jersey could not proceed with the $8.7 billion project due to billions in projected cost overruns that would be borne by the state.
New Jersey Transit is reviewing the request and assessing its options, according to a statement that noted the agency "does not agree" that Washington made a clear-cut case in its letter.

$268 million federal money to restore lost teachers' jobs still met with uncertainty in NJ.
Error on 'Race to the Top' application costs N.J. $400M in federal funds
In the case of Christie, it appears that the travel vouchers in question were approved by the bean counters in Washington at the time. Now it is all being questioned by Eric Holder's political apparatchniks in DOJ. That is $2,000 over a 6 year period ($333.00 a year by my calculations).
the Associated Press identified Christie as “U.S. Attorney C” in the report, based on a comparison of details in the report and public records of Christie’s travel expenses released under the Freedom of Information Act during his campaign for governor…
Of the 208 individuals who served as U.S. attorneys during the period reviewed by the office of Inspector General Glenn A. Fine, from 2007 to 2009, five “exhibited a noteworthy pattern of exceeding the government rate and whose travel documentation provided insufficient, inaccurate, or no justification for the higher lodging rates.”…
According to the report, Christie exceeded the government rate without adequate justification the most often as a percentage of travel. The investigation found that he submitted 23 vouchers including reimbursement for lodging from 2007 to 2009, of which 15, exceeded the government rate. The inspector general found insufficient justification for 14 of the 15 cases…
Anticipating Christie’s response, the image that comes to mind is another big man, Babe Ruth, stepping up to the plate and pointing to the area of the fence where he’s going to blast the next home run.

The UNIONS can't stand it and therefore the Obama Administration can't stand it and is going to teach him a lesson.
