Reminds me of a similiar editorial from that other fine Kansas institootion of higher lernin', (one I clipped and hung on my wall for years as a reminder that children journalists are our future), which in effect said, "farmers have no incentive to take care of their animals, because after all, they're just going to kill them anyway..."
Buy 'em books, and buy 'em books, and they just chew the covers off.

And here's another article to brighten your day:

A lobbying success story of milk: Unnatural, unhealthy, unwise

By Beth Mendenhall

Humans are the only animals on the planet that drink another animal’s milk. Thus, by definition, drinking cows’ milk is extremely unnatural.
Despite thousands of years of cattle domestication, the human digestive system hasn’t even adapted to dairy consumption, which is why you probably can’t do the “Gallon Challenge.” (click on the link above to read the whole thing)

The most important take-away lesson in this story is this one: "-Beth Mendenhall is a senior in political science and philosophy."

I believe that a good part of the reason we're getting our heads handed to us is that while the anti-technology voices on the liberal-arts sides of the campuses are learning to use (and misuse) the language of science against us, those of us on the ag and vet sides of the campuses aren't learning to speak their language well enough to argue back using their vocabulary.
It's a weakness we touch on with this week's Truth in Food installment, "The 10 Reasons they Hate you So." If you'd like to check it out: http://bit.ly/9ZL5c

I liked that bit too…
I have heard of bears tackling ewes in the Colorado high country, eating the udders, letting the ewe to bleed out and die while they go on to the next one and do the same thing. While this may be natural, it is terribly inhumane. Who is to say that “natural things” are acceptable or unacceptable? The author has a lot of nerve. I enjoy dairy products every day with the confidence that those cows are cared for and not subjected to the cruelty of the “natural world”.
