My dad grew up in that area! Ivan Doig also wrote several fiction books which I really liked (well, the last in the series wasn't great). I reread them every couple years but now I can't find them :???: Must have loaned all 4 them to someone, but don't know who.

NR, I am amazed that a guy with as much on his plate as you seem to have has time to read a book. Do you sleep???

This book has a copyright date of 1978. My parents gave me a paperback copy for either my birthday or Christmas that year. I read it right away. In June of 1979, Peach and I got hitched. We went to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and on to Glacier National Park on our honeymoon. On the way back to the Sandhills, we traveled through White Sulphur Springs, Montana, which is the general area of the setting of THIS HOUSE OF SKY. I enjoyed reading the book.

The current book I am reading is WAGER WITH THE WIND by James Greiner. It is the Don Sheldon story, about an Alaskan bush pilot. The bush pilots led very exciting lives in those early days, as they still do.

I've spent a bit of time flying with bush pilots in the mountains when I worked for a guide & outfitter. I wouldn't describe as exciting though. I think it would be more appropriate to say that it is hours upon hours of boredom and tedium interrupted my split seconds of sheer panic and terror.

You should read the book abobout Shawn's father-in-law in Alaska-that's wild country to fly and guide in. I agree with Silver's assessment-I'm not afraid to fly but I'm glad to land lol.

In the fall I fly with 3 or 4 different pilots to look for cows. These guys are all close friends :? that take turns to see if they can make me sick. So far no one's had to clean the plane after me.
When I was guiding for an outfitter back in the late 80's I was on a memorable flight in a high wind,   was glad to touch the ground that time.
