Green Grass and Red Cattle, Part II

I thought I would split my photos into two posts, so they'd download a little quicker! Photobucket has been the pits to deal with....ugggh.

It is so nice to see green grass, and we received another .95" of rain last night. Sorry to those who need it but didn't get any...we definitely know the feeling.

The place sure looks different TTB. Rain is a blessing isn't it? The stock look to be putting the grass to good use. Nice animals and photos.

I was once told that "they select black ones because they are black; they select red ones because they are good." Sometimes there appears to be some truth to that statement. You folks have picked some cause they are good. I like 'em!

The only thing that would make them look any prettier would be a Spearhead brand upon the left hip. They appear rather "naked" without a brand to dress them up, kind of like a nice clean restroom wall without any graffiti. :)

Seriously, they are fine looking cattle that anyone would be proud to have wear their brand.

Thank you all...the Lord is indeed good. More rain today...simply amazing.

Yes, Red Robin, it's quite amazing how much things can change in a year, heck even three months.

Cowzilla...you're right any cow would look good in nice green grass.

Cal, I tried to get one of our red gene carrying black cows in the pictures. I'll have to look and see if I have one. They apparently aren't good enough for the blacks, but they are good enough for us. Funny, blacks don't sell nearly as well for us as reds, even if they are of the same quality.

Shortgrass...you are right, color doesn't make the critter...the critter makes the color! As a matter of fact, to date, I believe the best bull I've ever seen was one in your breed, LT Wyoming Wind. Quite the impressive rascal. There are good and bad of all breeds...period. I'd gladly take a good of any breed over a bad of another.

Soapweed, you bring up an interesting point...one I myself have often wondered about. You see the cows are branded with a brand as unique as yours.

I asked lazy ace why we don't brand our registered calves in the spring. Our commercial cattle get a different brand than our registered, and our registered calves that "don't make grade" at branding time/spring working time get a commercial brand. What we came up with is that we don't brand our registered bull calves because lots of our customers brand on the left hip as we do, and we want them to be able to put their brand on the bull when they buy him. Secondly, we'll sift heifers pretty hard, and sell the second cut as replacement quality heifers, and having them slick allows for the new owners to have one brand heifers. The registered heifers that make the cut get branded in the late fall.

We keep our registered cows close to home, and I guess feel confident that our neighbors are honest. Our commercial calves are further from home, and don't get looked at as often as our registered.

Historically (like 30+ years ago) I am guessing our commercial calves were cut, implanted, and branded. For the most part, the registered herd didn't get treated with that protocol so they weren't branded. And now, it's just the way stuff is done....

Who knows...good question though, and you're quite observant too! By the way, for the right amount of cash, your brand could be on these

Cheers---

If you don't mind me asking what blood lines do you use for your cattle? You have a very uniform bunch of cows and well built calves
