Greenspan Rips Bush, GOP Leaders in Book

Saturday, September 15, 2007 10:32 AM

WASHINGTON -- Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan sharply criticizes President George W. Bush's administration and Republican congressional leaders in his memoir for putting political imperatives ahead of sound economic policies, several newspapers reported on Friday.

"Little value was placed on rigorous economic policy debate or the weighing of long-term consequences," Greenspan writes of the Bush administration.

Accounts of Greenspan's book, "The Age of Turbulence: Adventures in a New World," which is due to be published Monday, appeared in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, the Washington Post and USA Today.

Greenspan said he unsuccessfully urged the White House to veto "out-of-control" spending bills while the Republicans controlled Congress.

Republicans "deserved" to lose control of Congress in last year's election because in their willingness to approve spending measures that would benefit Republicans even at the cost of fiscal prudence, they "swapped principle for power," he said.

Greenspan's congressional testimony in favor of tax cuts during the early part of the Bush administration has been criticized by some for giving the green light to Congress to approve the president's fiscal policies.

However, the former Fed chief has subsequently said Congress ignored his recommendations that it accompany any substantial tax cuts with safeguards to protect against future deficits. In his book, he acknowledges that people who warned him that his words would be used selectively were right.

"The tax-cut testimony proved to be politically explosive," he writes.

"While politics had not been my intent, I'd misjudged the emotions of the moment. . . . Yet I'd have given the same testimony if Al Gore had been president," he says.

Greenspan, now 81, was chairman of the U.S. central bank from August 1987 until January 2006. He was the second-longest serving chairman in the Fed's 93-year history. Bush's first term began in 2001.

Looking at the future of the U.S. economy, Greenspan warns that if the Fed is to keep the inflation rate between 1 percent and 2 percent in coming years it may need to force interest rates into double digits.

But Greenspan said he feared the Fed would face "populist resistance from Congress, if not from the White House" to its policy of maintaining price stability.

He said if the Fed succumbed to that pressure, the inflation rate could rise to an average of 4 percent to 5 percent by 2030, and 10-year Treasury yields would rise to at least 8 percent with the potential to go "significantly higher for brief periods."

OFFERING A DEFENSE

The former Fed chief said that as the process of increasing globalization slows, inflation pressures will reassert themselves. He points to recent increases in the prices of U.S. imports from China and a rise in long-term interest rates as signs "the turn may be upon us sooner rather than later."

Nawww, Greenspan knew what he was doing... they had to get richer.

Bernanke is expected to drop the Fed funds rate on September 18. The move will provide more “easy credit-crack” for the addicts on Wall Street but it could also trigger a run on the dollar. That’s what keeps the Fed-chief up at night.

The Bush Team was warned repeatedly—by the BIS, the World Bank, the IMF and the European Central Bank ECB—that their policies were “unsustainable” and would end in an economic meltdown. But they brushed aside the warnings with the same casual indifference as they did the critics of the war in Iraq.

Why would they care if the country suffered? Their friends would still get their massive, unfunded tax cuts. Their private armies and “no bid” contractors would still get their payola. The Democrats would still cave in on the enormous “off budget” war spending. And, they’d still be able to print as much counterfeit money as they chose until every last copper-farthing was drained from the public till.

No worries. Besides the media would mop up the mess they’d made with their usual “happy talk”. As the economic calamity unfolds, we can expect to see the usual parade of lacquer-haired phonies on the Business Channel singing the praises of “free markets” and the poisonous culture of overspending and consumerism.

The problems we’re now facing should have been easy to spot for anyone willing to look beyond the empty rhetoric of the TV Pollyannas or their cheerleading co-conspirators at the White House. Instead, we were anesthetized by Greenspan’s low-interest snake oil and Bush’s “tax-slashing” mumbo-jumbo thinking that they‘d found a new path to prosperity.

It was a hoax. And the seven years of sleepwalking has cost us dearly. Unemployment is up, consumer spending is down, the housing market has slipped into recession, and the stock market is lurching back and forth like an overloaded washing machine. All of this could have been foreseen by anyone with minimal critical thinking skills and a healthy dose of skepticism of government.

Consider this: US GDP is 70% consumer spending. That means that wages have to increase beyond the rate of inflation OR THE ECONOMY CAN’T GROW. It’s just that simple. So how is it that 50% of the American people still believe Bush’s supply side baloney that cutting taxes for the uber-rich strengthens the economy? How does that increase wages or build a healthy middle class. If we want a strong economy wages have to keep pace with productivity so that workers can buy the goods they produce.

Greenspan knows that. So does Bush. But they chose to hide it behind an “easy credit” smokescreen so they could weaken the dollar, off-shore thousands of industries, out-source 3 million manufacturing jobs, fund an illegal war, and maintain the lethal flow of the $800 billion current account deficit into American equities and Treasuries. In truth, there hasn’t been any growth in the economy since Bush took office in 2000. What we’ve seen is an ever-expanding bubble of personal and corporate debt amplified by a “structured finance” system that magically transforms liabilities (subprime loans) into securities and increases their value through leveraging.

That’s it. No growth—just a galaxy of debt-instruments with odd-sounding names (CDOs, MBSs, CDSs, etc) stacked precariously on top of each other. That’s what we call “wealth” in America.

It’s all smoke and mirrors. The financial system has decoupled from the productive elements of the economy and is now beginning to show disturbing signs of instability. That’s why the big blow-off in the bond market. The halcyon days of supplying our armies, funding our markets and building our subprime “ownership society” empire on the backs of foreign creditors is over. The stock market is headed for the landfill and housing is leading the way. Economic fundamentals can only be ignored for so long.

GREENSPAN’S BLOODY FINGERPRINTS

The problems began when Greenspan dropped interest rates to 1% in 2003 for more than a year pumping trillions of low interest credit into the economy. This created the appearance of prosperity but it also inflated a massive equity bubble in housing which is now in its death throes. The Fed “rubber stamped” many of the “creative financing” scams which lowered lending standards and turned the subprime fiasco into a $1.5 trillion doomsday machine.

The devastation in real estate is almost too vast to comprehend. The mortgage bubble is roughly $5.5 trillion, and yet, prices have just begun to fall. It’s a long way to the bottom and there’s bound to be plenty of bloodshed ahead. Two million homeowners will lose their homes. 151 mortgage lenders have already gone belly up. Many of the hedge funds—which are loaded with billions of dollars in “mortgage-backed” securities are struggling to stay alive. Perhaps the most shocking projection was made by Yale University Professor, Robert Schiller, who believes that home prices could decline as much as 50% in some of the “hotter markets”. (Schiller’s book “Irrational Exuberance” predicted the dot.com bust before it took place) The effects on the US economy would be considerable. If other factors come into play—like a stock market crash and a subsequent period of deflation—we could see housing prices descend 90% as they did between 1928 and 1933.

It’s possible.

Typically, housing bubbles deflate very slowly, over a period of 5 to 10 years. Not this time. Credit problems in the broader market are speeding up the pace of the decline. The subprime sarcoma has spread to all loan categories and filtered into the banking system. This is forcing the banks to hoard reserves to cover their potential losses (from CDOs and mortgage-backed bonds “gone bad”). Now, even credit worthy applicants are being turned away on new mortgages. At the same time, “nearly half of borrowers with adjustable rate mortgages were not able to refinance their loans. That’s a major concern for policymakers as an estimated 2.5 million mortgages given to borrowers with weak credit will reset at higher rates by the end of next year.” (Associated Press)

Think about that. It’s no longer just a matter of 40% of loan-types disappearing overnight (Subprime, Alt-A, piggyback, negative amortization, interest only etc). Even people with good credit are being rejected because the banks are hoarding capital. That suggests the banks are in dire straights and hiding losses that are kept off their balance sheets. (more on this later)

So, it’s harder to get a mortgage. And, if you already have one you may not be able to roll it over. This will greatly accelerate the rate of the housing crash. (In fact, the LA Business Journal reported on Sunday that home sales plunged 50% in one month. We can expect to see similar numbers in all the hot spots.)

DOLLAR WOES

The troubles facing the dollar are as grave as those in housing. The stock market and the teetering hedge funds are counting on an interest rate cut, but they’ve ignored the effects it will have on the greenback. If Bernanke lowers rates—as everyone expects— the bottom could drop out of the dollar. We’re already seeing gold soar to new highs (above $700 per Ounce) That’s an indication of dollar-weakness and a potential sell-off of US Treasuries. If Bernanke lowers rates, the greenback will nosedive.

But at least Ron Paul got it right and if we don't heed his words (whether he becomes pres or not) we will all be sucked under. I've already started seeing articles on how you should have six months of food and 10 gallons of water on hand as the day will come when the banks close and ATM's won't work so as to prevent a run on the bank. One should have about $5000 cash on hand and if you are unable to do that you better learn how to barter. There's too much info out there OT, to think that Greenspan, the Federal Reserve or Bush cronies did NOT know what they were doing.

The full article http://www.marketoracle.co.uk/Article1126.html
How will the Media destroy Ron Paul?

He's also outspoken on other issues which are typically verbotem in the MSM. Here's what he has to say about the maneuverings of the Federal Reserve, the secretive cabal that controls our money:

“Congress created the Federal Reserve System in 1913. Between then and 1971 the principle of sound money was systematically undermined. Between 1913 and 1971, the Federal Reserve found it much easier to expand the money supply at will for financing war or manipulating the economy with little resistance from Congress-- while benefiting the special interests that influence government.

Since printing paper money is nothing short of counterfeiting, the issuer of the international currency must always be the country with the military might to guarantee control over the system. This magnificent scheme seems the perfect system for obtaining perpetual wealth for the country that issues the de facto world currency. The one problem, however, is that such a system destroys the character of the counterfeiting nation’s people - just as was the case when gold was the currency and it was obtained by conquering other nations. And this destroys the incentive to save and produce, while encouraging debt and runaway welfare.”

Do you really think that the board-members of the "privately-owned" Central Bank want the American people to know about the extortionist racket they’ve been running for the last 90 years in contravention of the US Constitution?

Paul’s demand that we abolish the Federal Reserve is strikingly similar to that of his ideological ancestor Thomas Jefferson, who said:

“If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of our currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and the corporations that will grow up will deprive the people of all property until their children wake up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered. The issuing of power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs.”

Isn’t that what is happening right now? Doesn’t the Fed inflate one massive equity bubble after another so that working class people are lured in by low-interest rates and then lose their shirts when the bubble pops? This is how the banking elites shift wealth from one class to another. It may be an old scam, but it never fails.

Jefferson and Paul are both right. Free people cannot control their own destiny unless they control their own currency. The Federal Reserve must be abolished and, as Paul says, “The sooner the better”.

He’s right about deficits and monetary policy, too. Here's what he says:

"The greatest threat facing America today is not terrorism, or foreign economic competition, or illegal immigration. The greatest threat facing America today is the disastrous fiscal policies of our own government, marked by shameless deficit spending and Federal Reserve currency devaluation. It is this one-two punch – Congress spending more than it can tax or borrow, and the Fed printing money to make up the difference – that threatens to impoverish us by further destroying the value of our dollars”.

The men who own the media don’t want this type of populism on the air-waves. After all, they love deficits. The trade deficits provide cheap capital for the stock market while the budget deficit borrows money from future generations for lavish tax cuts for Bush’s wealthy buddies.

No wonder they hate Paul!

I wouldn't bet a lot on a rate cut this week. The Fed is between a rock and a hard spot. Lowering rates might help the credit mess, but it hurts the bigger picture of our dollar and our debt. Lowering interest rates makes our bonds less attractive compared to other places money can be invested, and that is already a problem that is hurting us. They've already said that they would rather stay out of the mess and let things right themselves because they know there will be a bigger price to pay later.

yUP, I think I said that once before it was about the oil for the us and now Greenspan admits it. Cheney was planning on Saddam's decline because he was wanting to be paid in EUROs not dollars........

The twin towers had asbestos in them, it was gonna cost $20 billion to properly and correctly remove the asbestos..... why don't they look into the 5 Israel students who were caught by the FBI "wanting to document the people's reaction" to the explosion. Its better to chase after Saddam than to get the real culprits, Israel.

Israel never wanted the US to invade Iraq they want Iran..... and somehow, someway they will drag the US over there.

SH - I've read on the internet they are going to drop it 1/4 of a percent.... which isn't much but I guess we'll have to see on the 18th....

You cannot collapse the dollar and expect the consumer to keep on spending. I've been reading that many economists are predicting between 35 and 50 percent unemployment in the USA (it may take 12-24 months to get here but it will happen) and there will be pandemonium everywhere. Hopefully it won't be as bad here as it was in USSR when they fell, but they had power outages. Stop and think when people in the city can't get groceries/gas because they don't have cash on hand because banks are closed to keep a run from happening and your ATM card doesn't work. Since the government says they can stop or reduce Social Security at any time think how many people and especially the elderly that will affect. As the dollar collapses, consumer goods will go upppppppp......

Until the American people start living BELOW their means instead of above it things will never "level" out or have a total crash and then they will be forced to live within their means.

The twin towers had asbestos in them,

FACT:
"Anticipating a ban (on the use of asbestos in construction in NY), the builders stopped using the materials by the time they reached the 40th floor of the north tower, the first one to go up…" According to a spokesman for the Port Authority "more than half of the original, asbestos-containing material was later replaced."

More evidence?

An interesting bit of information came from a reader who was hired in 1983 by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to make a film about the construction of the World Trade Center.

The engineers responsible for overseeing construction supposedly told him that One World Trade Center was completely insulated with asbestos, but only two-thirds of Two World Trade Center had been insulated with asbestos when New York City banned the material in 1971. One World Trade Center lasted 45 minutes longer than Two World Trade Center.

Almost literally adding fuel to the fire is that more than half of the original asbestos was eventually removed from the twin towers, a Port Authority spokesman told the New York Times. Experts say that the replacement insulation was inferior to asbestos.

We’ll never know for sure whether asbestos insulation might have provided a few extra minutes of escape from the doomed towers. But this is an issue worth raising and debating, not to point fingers but to inform an attentive public that bogus scares may have consequences.

again you show your true ignorance... or your lack of ability to think.

In light of the devastation and horror of the tragedies which took place in NY and Washington, there will be many questions raised about the construction of the twin towers and the performance of the fireproofing materials used. It is a time to reflect and review; to identify ways in which we can protect our citizens and the infrastructure of our countries. This must be done with open minds and all the technological and scientific innovation we can muster. Do not let us get misdirected by a smokescreen of blame and misunderstanding that conspiracy theorists bring to the subject.

Yes but one must wonder why Congress doesn't request their own investigation into 9/11 (according to the constitution they can) but instead keep asking Bush.... you can't trust Bush .......... also the scientific reports are being ignored (the ones that say an explosion occurred from within not when the planes hit).

MoGal; do you realize that "thousands of people" died that day?

I've been to the World Trade Center, not only before but after as well. I personally know people who died that day in that building...My brother was In the building that day...at about 9:30...

If we did it I would be the first to call for GW Bush to fry for the crimes.... I have an engineering background..some of the finest the military could give...I can read and understand facts...and

Yep- I can never buy any of those Trade Center conspiracy stories...
Having attended many classes at or put on by the National Fire Academy and having worked with numerous fire investigators, I know for many years the fire departements have been concerned about skyscraper buildings coming down this way- because of internal load and fire weakening causing a "pancaking effect"...And it has happened in other fires around the world--it was just that they've never had buildings of this size before....

Also my old explosives training tells me that it would take a team of workers working for months inside a building that size setting tons of explosives and wiring them to cause that type implosion....Now how GW sat all those explosives without anyone knowing it or finding out is beyond belief...

And then to coordinate that with explosives inside the Pentagon--one of the most guarded places in the country without anyone knowing it  Its hard to envision all the Generals and staff sitting there watching their building be wired- knowing it may kill them

Besides the hijacking of planes fits the Al Quaida's old M.O. as they had tryed to do it a few years before- in the South Pacific, but were thwarted by FBI, CIA, and other nations intelligence units---and the FBI knew they were still trying to do it.... The sad thing is that even after that our US politicians and public wouldn't take serious the danger of Bin Laden and folks like him...Just like GW and our government won't awaken to the danger of our porous borders-- until nukes go off in major cities... :(

While I often disagree with you I find you never totally rely on what someone is saying,...and use your experiance and knowledge to form your opinions, even if I often disagree, I can respect that..

and even when I find articles that say "exactly" what I want to support, I don't stop there..I like to read the opposing view... and have read alot on the trade centers..

But facts and extremely unbiased sources show that Radical Islamic Terrorists caused the destruction of the World trade centers and the deaths of 2,974 people died as an immediate result of the attacks.

1366 people died who were at or above the floors of impact in the North Tower

As many as 600 people were killed instantly or were trapped at or above the floors of impact in the South Tower

At least 200 people jumped to their deaths from the burning towers

The youngest victim was a 2 year-old child

Various conspiracy theories have emerged as a reaction to the attacks suggesting that individuals outside of the terrorist organization Al Qaeda knew of, planned, or carried out the attacks. These theories are not accepted as credible by virtually all mainstream journalists, scientists, and political leaders, who have concluded that responsibility for the attacks and the resulting destruction rests with Al Qaeda.

Bin Ladens danger has been known in law enforcement circles for many years-- as I'd sat thru many briefings on him--including the Philippine uncovered plot to hijack US Airlines...
My sister was a regional supervisor Special Agent with the FBI (now retired)- and she had for some time worked counterterrorism...She just happened to be vacationing at my house on 9/11...After the first plane hit the building, I woke her up and we were watching as the second plane flew into the building....The first words out of her mouth were "Al Qaeda- Bin Laden!!!"

During the Clinton/Janet Reno days the FBI/CIA were almost totally neutered...With Clinton not supporting law enforcement- and a Republican Congress playing with the purse strings they were set back 20 years...Staffing was let to fall behind and when the rest of the world was coming into the computer age--they did not even have a computer system that was compatable across the country...Many State and local agencies had better equipment than they did...Just like with the military--they lost many good agents that retired as soon as they could- because Clintons policies had ruined their faith in what they were doing....

And its not only Clintons fault--GW was asleep at the wheel too (altho he hadn't had much time to step things up)-along with the American public that would not take note of the warnings...Not even after the first World Trade Center bombing- just writing it off as a few fanatical nuts.....

It took 911 to wake everyone up.....

Clinton Warned on Bin Laden Hijack-Kamikaze Plot
Newsmax ^ | 05.16.02 | Newsmax

If you don't recall seeing the blaring post-9-11 headline "Clinton Warned on Bin Laden Hijack-Kamikaze Plot," it's not because your memory is failing.

In fact, the big media mostly ignored the story - in marked contrast to today's wall-to-wall coverage of news that President Bush received a pre-9-11 CIA briefing on a possible bin Laden hijack plot.

And while the warning transmitted to Bush gave no inkling that bin Laden planned to transform U.S. airliners into flying bombs and slam them into American office buildings, in fact, Clinton administration intelligence officials were in the possession of detailed information on an al Qaeda conspiracy to hijack several U.S. airliners - including a plan to crash one of the planes into the Pentagon or CIA.

It was called "Operation Bojinka," a 1995 plot hatched by an al Qaeda cell in the Philippines with an eye towards blowing up 12 American airliners. Some would be booby trapped with bombs like Pan Am 103, others hijacked like the four U.S. jets commandeered on 9-11 and crashed into buildings.

Though the mainstream press never demonstrated much enthusiasm for the story, Accuracy in Media's Reed Irvine detailed what the Clinton administration knew - and when it knew it - for NewsMax.com last October.

Citing a Sept. 13 Agence France-Presse report, Irvine noted that Philippine Police Chief Superintendent Avelino Razon had uncovered the plot to "plant bombs in U.S. airliners and hijack others to crash them into buildings like the CIA headquarters."

"Razon said (the plot) was found on the computer of Ramzi Yousef, the organizer of the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center," Irvine reported. "He had fled to Pakistan, but his laptop was found in the apartment he shared with his accomplice, Abdul Hakim Murad. Razon said both were agents of Osama bin Laden."

A later Agence France-Press report noted:

"Among targets mentioned (in Yousef's computer files) was the World Trade Center in New York..... CIA offices in Virginia and the Sears Tower in Chicago."

Picking up where Irvine left off, the Washington Post quoted a Filipino investigator, who said that as he watched the attack on the World Trade Center on television he exclaimed in horror, "It's Bojinka. We told the Americans everything about Bojinka. Why didn't they pay attention?"

Chief Police Superintendent Avelino Razon told the Philippine Daily Inquirer that the Philippine intelligence report was passed on to the U.S. Embassy and the U.S. Joint Task Force on Terrorism. "

It was not given credibility. Otherwise, it could have prevented the destruction of the World Trade Center," he explained.

The Clinton FBI was in full possession of all the frightening facts on Bojinka, but did nothing. Instead, as Reed Irvine revealed, the bureau assured Congress that everything was under control.

"In testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee subcommittee on Terrorism in February 1998, 'Bojinka' - which means 'big bang' - was described by Dale L. Watson, chief of the International Terrorism Operations Section of the FBI, only as a plot to blow up 'numerous U.S. air carriers.'

"He said that the FBI had identified 'a significant and growing organizational presence' of foreign terrorists in the United States. He swore the bureau had them under control."

The Clinton FBI counterintelligence chief told the Senate that as a result of the bombings of the World Trade Center in 1993 and the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City in 1995 the FBI had developed an 'enhanced capability' to track terrorist activities.

Is it likely that U.S. intelligence possessed this much information on al Qaeda plans to slam planes into U.S. buildings - and didn't tell President Clinton?

Actually it is, if you believe the account of his former CIA Director James Woolsey, who said Clinton never bothered to meet with him during his stint as the nation's intelligence chief.

What about other administration officials, like Attorney General Janet Reno, who certainly should have known about Bojinka?

There Clinton may also have an alibi.

During all of 1998 - the same year FBI counterintelligence briefed Congress on the al Qaeda hijack plot - Clinton met with his Cabinet exactly twice: Once in January to lie to them about his relationship with Monica Lewinsky, and again in August to come clean about the affair.

Many of US missed the warnings....but the fact remains...those who committed the act of terrorism, and who have true evil in their hearts are already dead...and it is up to GOD to serve justice upon them....as fro those who planned and conspired to bring this horrific tragedy upon US,..I pray that their final Judgment is soon in coming..
