If I have this wrong, please tell me why you say that:
President Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid both a giant disappointment and both hurt the American people these past two years by their political game. They were selfish.
Congress - and I lay the blame on Senator Harry Reid directly - got nothing done these last two years. That hurts America. We hire them to do a job and we got nothing. Americans can't always agree, but we at least have to try and work on our problems and our differences. Senator Harry made that impossible.
I blame Senator Harry Reid because legislation was passed in the Republican controlled House and then when the House bill was sent to the Senate, Reid refused to allow the Senate to vote on it. He dead ended any proposed legislation - so it never got to the President's desk to sign or to veto.
What is disgraceful is this: President Obama should have called Reid and said "put the House proposed legislation up for a vote." He should have made that call. He is the boss of the Democratic Party - and yes, the President of all of us.
Because Senator Harry Reid controlled the Senate, even though he had political differences with the House Republican bills, he could have passed a modified (different) House bill in the Senate that satisfied his party, the Democrats.
And then you know what would have happened? Do you know the next step when you have two bills (one House, one Senate) that conflict?
The 2 bills - one from the House Republicans and the other from the Senate Democrats - whould have been sent to CONFERENCE. At conference is where differences in House and Senate bills are worked out. Members from the House and the Senate sit together and figure out how to make it work.
In other words, they would have hammered out their differences, negotiated a single bill and sent it to President Obama to sign. And the American people would have had some progress (and yes, at least gotten SOMETHING for the tax dollars that pay salaries!) We won't always agree on everything or get all that any of us wants but we can work out our differences if we have a chance and Reid made that impossible.
Senate bills did not get passed and sent to conference because Senator Harry Reid did not give a damn about the American people. He abused his position and stopped all chance of bills being sent to the President for signature.
President Obama is responsible for this, too. He is boss of the Democratic Party and he never bothered to pick up the phone and tell Senator Harry Reid to 'knock off this selfish political stuff."
They were both playing ugly politics with the American people....they were selfish..thinking only of themselves.
