I talk to a goat man from here today. He's high on perimes dogs. He said goats were a little down but holdin steady. He liked woods goats or spanish. He got the biger ones and run boer stud goats. He said they had about 4 average kids a year. He also said they worked well with cattle and hardly took much from them. Also, start out with a few to see if u like them before I got a bunch. He aint knowed about the lamas or if a goat would make a good wife. He aint but a few miles from me and welcomed me to come and look. I don't know if I beleave this but he said u could run 25 goats in place of a cow. At a adverage of 4 kids times 25 and bringin from 60 to 80 dollars and. 8 months to grow out. Well, I aint buyin that. Even if they did make good wifes.
Did some reading on a breed by the name of Kengal quite awhile back---they sound like they would destroy quite a few coyotes and still maintain a 'family' pet side. Pretty pricey, but the loss of sheep and calves can add up fast, too!
No PC that is instinct from day one. Train them to come to you when you call them by name so you can move them where you want them. They are easy to train much like a horse or even a dog.
Marshmallow knows his name and comes when called and I can move him wherever I want (most times  ) they halter train really easy as well.
We had well over 100 ewes at one point and a Great Pyranees truly is great.
Our cows will kill a dog when they are calving and I ahve watched kill coyotes, but the Pyranees could go right in between them and they would never bat an eye. He used to lay with the calves. We never lost a lamb to a coyote when we had him.
we run a couple hundred ewes in a farm flock, and use a Pyrenees x Akbash spade female , she lets out borser collies work the sheep. She even bonds with the replacment hiefers or bull depending on which get wintered with the ewes.
when she hears coyotes she gather the sheep push them into the barn or under a night lite then head out towards the coyotes.
Well, it seem that all, dogs, donkeys and lamas work good for some but not for others. I think buildin a seperate night pen with hotwire around the outside would make u sleep better at night. Built around some big liveoaks for shelter and buildin some sheds maybe. Putin up in my new cowpens could cause some problems.
