I am really sorry this thread went the road it did, I actually thought it might be a thought provoking thread as to rather a green card resident should have gun purchasing rights. I had always thought they can not buy, because I thought you had to check a spot on the gun purchase application that you were a U.S. Citizen. I now suspect it might say you are a legal resident.

Don't sweat it Aplus. I've seen enough of your words in this forum and others to know what you are about. You are a hard working father who is trying to do the best he can for his family. I figure your emotions involved protecting your children and so you came out.

There are good and bad from all walks of life. From all nations too. I welcome the good ones to come here and help me make this a better place for our families.

Now that everybody is getting along, maybe we can get back to the topic...

I agree with what OT said about residents not automatically having all of the same rights as citizens. But I believe that the Second Amendment confers upon all of us one of our most basic and essential rights - the right to protect ourselves and, more importantly, our families from those that wish to steal from us, or to otherwise do us harm.

We could debate all day long about our immigration mess. Granted there are plenty of problems. But MOST of the legal immigrants, and even the illegal immigrants, are here to WORK. To deprive them of the basic right to defend themselves or their families against people who just wish to TAKE from those that work...well...that just doesn't set well with me.

To tell people that they are good enough to work here, they're good enough to pay taxes here, they're good enough to serve in our military, but...tough sht when it comes to defending yourself? I can't support that. That's not very American, is it?

One area I have to give more research to is what is entailed in getting a green card and becoming a legal resident but not actually being an American Citizen. That is one area I realized from my arguments that I might need to be more informed on. I might be thinking of to short of a gap between illegal immigrants and legal immigrants.

As said before I always thought the Gun application asked if you were an American Citizen but obviously it does not because if you answer no to any questions you are denied.

I am going to be at a gun store in next day or two so I am going to check out the exact wording.

I guess you're thinking about Line k in the certification part:

k. Are you an alien illegally in the United States?

Lines 10, 11 and 13 make it clear that you don't have to be a citizen.

Page 3 and page 4 of the form also gives some more information about aliens.
