Hackamore vs Bit Question.

I think the original post must have been a mechanical jaw chain/ barrel racers rig.

The book by Connel is the bible, but Dave Jones is a better teacher if you're really green.

There are few hackamore reinsmen, but that is a lofty goal for everyone to learn from. A good hackamore man can get nice results from a snaffle as well, I think the bosal demands good hands.

If I remember right, the hacks that I saw did have a small chain under the jaw. So maybe they were mechanical hackamores. Like I said, I'm an idiot when it comes to horse-stuff plus it was about 30 years ago.
I like the sound of the bosals that others mentioned so maybe will try that. The mechanical/chain thing does seem a little harsh when I stop and think about it.
Maybe a better title for this thread would have been "Bit or no Bit ??"
All I know is that after I saw those ponies mouth's bleeding, all those years ago, I always thought that if I ever owned a horse I wouldn't use a bit if I could avoid it.
I finally own a horse, at 40+ yrs old. Kinda sucks to be a beginner at this age but good advice is pretty easy to come by around here. :)

If you do use a bosal remember two things. One is that the smaller the Plait( number of strands of rawhided used) the coarser and more riggid it will be I always use a 16 you don't want to scalp your horses jaw. And you don't just buy one and go use it, you need to shape it first.

Tim, We were all green at one time....You have a good teacher with your wife so just pay attention......

You know thats pretty good advice.

Yes it is , but here is the problem......... I laughed, picked on, and made fun of her when I was teaching her to drive a tractor or work with cattle.....

I got a lot of "payback" coming to me and I'm really not looking forward to it. :D

Mr Lilly's payback for makin fun of me when he was teachin me how to drive the tractor came when he asked me if I'd help him learn how to cook.......... what's good about this deal....takes alot longer to learn how to cook than it does to learn how to drive a tractor. hehe
