FBI reports hate crime decrease for 2009

The number of reported hate crime incidents and victims decreased in 2009, according to the FBI Hate Crime Statistics report [materials; press release] released Monday. The number of reported incidents was down to 6,604 from 7,783 in 2008, while the number of reported victims was down to 8,336 from 9,691. Of these incidents, 61 percent were against persons, while the remaining percentage were directed towards property,

Although there was an increase in the number of federal agencies providing data, preventing an exact comparison of 2008 and 2009 statistics, the FBI [official website] is confident that its increased efforts in investigating hate crimes have brought about positive change.

so, more agencies are reporting in 2009 then in 2008, but the numbers are down..

FBI: Hate crimes, victims decrease

There were 6,604 hate crime incidents reported last year, down from 7,783 in 2008. There were 8,336 reported victims, down from 9,691 in 2008.

The year-to-year figures in the FBI reports for 2009 and 2008 are not exactly comparable because the number of law enforcement agencies providing data to the bureau on hate crimes went up last year to more than 14,000, compared to 13,690 in 2008.

I guess the tea party will not be blamed for the decrease..

BTW,.. if your wondering how last year was..

Hate crimes decrease

While the number of law enforcement agencies submitting data to the FBI increased — topping off at 14,222 — the number of hate crime incidents reported for 2009 (6,604) was down from 2008. The number of reported victims (8,336) has also gone down. “Victims,” in this case, can be individuals, businesses, institutions, and society as a whole.

I guess 2008 was really bad..
Fewer hate crimes in 2008, Obama's election year, data show

Reported incidents of hate-related violence and vandalism declined in America in 2008 from the year before – a period that included both the election of Barack Obama as president and a burst of threats and hate-mongering as Election Day neared.

Statistics show a 2 percent drop in reported hate crimes from 2007 levels, according to law-enforcement data

"People are unhappy; it's the downfall of civilization. I get it," says Valerie Jenness, a criminologist at the University of California at Irvine and author of "Hate Crimes: New Social Movements & the Politics of Violence." "But I don't think there's a lot of empirical evidence that we have a massive insurgence [of violence] going on. The level of discourse, after all, is different than the level of mobilizing and actual behavior."

oh it dropped then in 2008 as well.. how can that happen?
