LONDON (AP) - British police responding to a call about a possible break-in at a pub in northern England Monday found themselves in the middle of a ghoulish riddle.

Officers arrived at the Low Valley Arms pub near Barnsley in South Yorkshire, 400 kilometres north of London, after being told the alarm had been set off, but instead of finding any signs of a robbery, they were faced with a shaken landlord convinced he had encountered a ghost with half a face missing in the ladies washroom.

Although they saw no ghoul-described as a woman in flowing white gown-officers were shocked to find toilets flushing themselves, said Insp. John Bowler of South Yorkshire Police.

Pub landlord Roger Froggat, 55, and his wife Kathryn, 49, moved in a year ago and said they had seen nothing before, despite rumours of a resident spectre.

"I heard the alarm go off for a second time, went into the pub and all the television screens had turned on," the pub owner said.

"I went to check the rest of the pub and standing in the women's lavatories was a woman with half her face missing. I was petrified."

Officers found no signs of forced entry and were left quite scared, Bowler added.

Since the ghost story became public, the pub has become the talk of the town, attracting everyone from mediums to a national television film crew determined to catch a glimpse of the mystery woman should she appear again.

Despite their shock, the Froggats said they have no plans to leave their village pub.

when you work in a small hospital, such as i do, you will see things (and hear things) that will erase every ounce of doubt you have!! Even the most pessimistic leave our facility after a day or two and BELIEVE!

If you knew MY history you'd know why I half't to believe :!:
Be side my own personal Sperit - But that's a long story... for another time

I had a Fruit Stand on the 101 Highway that had a pair of Sperits
They looked like the heat waves you see on the road BUT they were in the rough forum of people - I got the feeling one was male the other female.

I would talk to them but could only feel their answers

Ok! I'm nuts you say BUT my employees would see them and I had one H3ll of a time telling them they would not hurt them.

OK :!: We're all nuts!

We would laugh - at least once per day some one off the street would FREEK-OUT and leave the store in fear - - We'd all have a good laugh!

I'd talk with them and ask if there was anything I could do for them to release them? One day they were just gone!

Wooooo :!:

I went into an antique store, this last Christmas season. It has an upstairs....which I didnt realize. I was about to leave, when the lady at the front desk asked if I'd been upstairs......I said no, and she pointed me towards a very narrow stair case. up two or three steps and turn left....up several more and turn left again, which led on up to the upstairs level, but had a half wall on the side the rooms were on. When I got to the top, the first thing I seen was an old rockin chair sittin there rockin......It rocked back and forth several times then slowed and was still.

My first reaction was....ok now I know I"m clumbsy, but I aint been in there yet to bump into somethin. Didnt really give it much more thought, till I went downstairs and was talkin to the lady. I jokingly said..."You have a ghost upstairs" They'd just recently opened this store but had had several different old buildings they had their business in previously. She said, "oh really?" your the first to say we have one in this building. Well as I told her what I'd seen, another couple had come into the store.........they were listening to us talk.....and then skeedaddled right on out when I said, "Yeah, upstairs, ya gotta ghost"....and told em which rockin chair it was. I apologized for runnin off her customers, and she just laffed and said it wasn't the first time that'd happened.
