Obama May Have Financial Edge in the Homestretch

When is a dollar not a dollar? Well, it depends on whose dollar it is. Obama's money strategy has been to raise money for his campaign in small amounts from small donors. Romney's strategy has been to let billionaires fund superPACs with unlimited donations. On the whole, the two parties are in balance on total funding, with the Republicans raising $736 million to the Democrats' $774 million. However Obama's real edge is that he has more money in his campaign treasury than Romney and the actual campaigns, by law, get the lowest advertising rate a television state gives anyone. In contrast, a station can charge a superPAC whatever it thinks it can get away with. Consequently, a campaign dollar actually buys more seconds of television time than a superPAC dollar.

The Obama campaign has been using the 7- or 8-digit checks being given by billionaires to Romney's superPACs as a way of stimulating small donors to write $20 checks. The strategy has worked reasonably well so far, as Obama--despite his massive spending all summer--had $89 million in the bank at the start of September, whereas Romney, with far less spending during the summer, had only $50 million cash on hand at the start of this month.

In an effort to raise more money quickly, Ann Romney is planning to appear at the Las Vegas home of billionaire Sheldon Adelson on Oct. 1. Adelson has already donated $36 million to Republican superPACs and is planning to give at least $100 million by November. The fundraiser is an attempt to get his wealthy friends to join in.

--------------------------------

Romney Devotes a Large Amount of Time to Fundraising

While Obama is out campaigning almost nonstop, Mitt Romney is frequently hidden away in some small room talking to potential donors. For example, he flew across the country yesterday to hold one 20-minute public rally at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas but spent the rest of the day talking to wealthy donors at a casino as well as holding another fund-raising event near San Francisco. He has been frequently criticized for not being out there on the hustlings much. For example, Peggy Noonan, Ronald Reagan's speechwriter, said: "Romney doesn't seem to be out there campaigning enough." If Romney were to put more of his own fortune, estimated at $250 million, into the campaign, he wouldn't have to beat the bushes for money so much, but apparently he does not want to invest his own money in the campaign.

It seems that Romney's strategists don't think that personal appearances by the candidate matter much any more. What is key, in their view, is raising tons of money and then saturating the airwaves with attack ads in battleground states. If Romney loses, in the postmortems, a lot of people will say that part of the reason he lost is that he barely talked to the voters personally. Of course, Romney's handlers may simply realize that when he appears in public in unscripted situations, he tends to say things they later regret, so the game plan is simply to avoid public events as much as possible.

Romney Campaign Borrowed $20 Million from a Bank During the Summer

Despite prodigious fund raising all year, the Romney campaign ran out of cash this summer and had to borrow $20 million from a bank to keep going. Part of the problem is that by law campaigns must separate money donated for the primaries from money donated for the general election. During the summer, the fund for the primaries was nearly empty but Romney was not allowed to use the general-election money until he was officially the Republican nominee, that is, after the convention. Getting the bank loan wasn't a problem since general-election money could be used as collateral.

The interesting thing about this story is the fact that despite the fact that Romney is personally worth about $250 million, he was unwilling to donate (or even loan) his campaign the needed $20 million. If you have just spent the last 5 years of your life campaigning for President and the race has 5 months to go, surely loaning your campaign a small fraction of your net worth seems like an obvious thing to do, but for whatever reason, Romney didn't do it. In 2008, he donated $40 million to his campaign.

Wow....$20 million......Just on his name?? Awesome...Borrowing it from a bank is good for America. Banks need sound loans that get repaid in full with interest. It keeps Americans employed.

Wonder what Buckwheat's line of credit at a bank would be. (Without a co-signer)??

Obama uses bundlers....he used them in 2008..Raise enough money you get a good cushy job or unlimited access to the Whitehouse or who knows what else...Maybe down time with Michelle.

Yep he is really counting on small donors just about like when he won 2008 with $5 donations when honestly he took more money from those WALL STREET FAT CATS than any other candidate.

Did Barack Obama hold 100-plus fundraisers while his jobs council never met?

In a video and an infographic, the Republican National Committee amplified a charge first raised by Mitt Romney on the stump the day before -- that President Barack Obama has held more than 100 fundraisers in the past six months, yet his jobs council didn’t meet once.

"In the last six months, he has held 100 fundraisers, and guess how many meetings he has had with his jobs council?" Romney said in a July 18, 2012, campaign event in Bowling Green, Ohio. "None. Zero. Zero in the last six months. So it makes it very clear where his priorities are."

The following day, the RNC released a graphic that provided some additional specifics. Over the last six months, the graphic said, Obama has golfed 10 times and held 106 fundraisers, but his jobs council has never met. The RNC supplemented this with a video that added a goofy soundtrack as well as audio and video of an exchange on this topic between reporters and White House press secretary Jay Carney.

Several readers asked us to check this statistic. We won’t pass judgment on how Obama should spend his time, but we will check the accuracy of the numbers.

The jobs council

Let’s start by explaining what the President's Council on Jobs and Competitiveness actually is. Its website explains that the panel was established "to provide nonpartisan advice to the President" on strengthening the economy and creating jobs.

The council is chaired by the chairman and CEO of General Electric, Jeffrey Immelt, and is populated by a variety of other business figures, such as former AOL chairman Steve Case, venture capitalist John Doerr, former Citigroup and Time Warner chairman Richard D. Parsons, as well as economist Laura D’Andrea Tyson and AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka.

Checking the lack of recent meetings was straightforward. The council’s own web page cites four meetings of the council so far -- Feb. 24, 2011, at the White House, June 13, 2011, in Durham, N.C., October 11, 2011, in Pittsburgh, and Jan. 17, 2012, at the White House.

The Web page does add that the council has also conducted "18 listening and action sessions in communities around the country with businesses and local leaders" and that it plans to hold more in the coming months. However, the Web page doesn’t appear to consider these to be "meetings," and since the most recent was just slightly over six months ago, the RNC’s claim is correct.

Asked about the lack of meetings in a July 18, 2012, press briefing, Carney said "the president solicits and receives input and advice from members of his jobs council and others about economic initiatives all the time. … There’s no specific reason (why they haven’t met) except the president has obviously got a lot on his plate."

Golf and fundraising

For statistics on Obama’s golf and fundraising activities, we turned to the RNC, which provided us with an Excel spreadsheet they had compiled internally. We then double-checked the RNC’s work.

There is no official tally of the president’s daily activities. There is one tally that’s unofficial but widely respected -- one compiled by longtime CBS News correspondent Mark Knoller.

Knoller tweeted on June 12, 2012, that "today's six events will bring to 160 the number of fundraisers Pres Obama has done since filing for re-election with the FEC last year." He also wrote in a story on June 17, 2012, that Obama had just played his 100th round of golf since taking office.

However, because Knoller did not return an inquiry for this story, we could not match these numbers to the RNC’s claim.

The RNC offered links to news accounts to back up Obama’s 10 golf outings in the past six months, and they confirmed golf outings on the dates cited by the RNC count.

As for fundraising events, the RNC only provided dates and locations. However, we were able to check this list using two sources.

The White House’s archive of presidential speeches and remarks offers chronological links to transcripts of the president’s comments at every public appearance he makes. Many, though not all, fundraising events are included in this archive.

Meanwhile, to track events that were closed to the press -- and thus wouldn’t be included in the archive of speeches and remarks -- we relied on our personal archive of White House pool reports, which are the dispatches written by journalists covering the White House several times a day and distributed to all members of the White House press corps. These pool reports will typically mention that the president is attending a fundraiser even if the event is closed to the press.

Using these two sources, we were able to confirm virtually all of the fundraisers cited by the RNC. In only three cases were we unable to verify fundraisers cited by the RNC using these sources. This doesn’t mean that these three events didn’t happen; we just couldn’t find pool reports that specifically backed them up. However, even if the actual number of fundraisers in the last six months turned out to be 103 rather than 106, we won’t quibble -- the number would be close enough for us to consider it accurate.

Our ruling

The RNC said that over the last six months, Obama has golfed 10 times and held 106 fundraisers even as his jobs council didn’t meet once. The RNC’s tally is on target. We rate the statement True
.

By mid July he had attended over 100 fund raisers Oldtimer and what makes me think if he is flying Air Force One out to these events they are not $5 events IE SMALL DONATIONS FROM SMALL DONORS? :?

How and sam h*ll do you know the newlyweds were on their 2nd, 3th, and 4th marriages. And it doesn't matter how many times they are married it matters that your hero is begging for THEIR WEDDING GIFT MONEY TO FUND ANOTHER FOUR YEARS OF FAILED POLICIES when all he had to do was close down a PUBLIC BEACH so he could attend yet another millionaire's fund raiser.

Connecticut beaches closed so Obama can fund-raise with Hollywood mogul
By Joseph Weber

Beachgoers, get lost.

Amid the peak summer season, two of Connecticut’s popular public beaches -- maintained with taxpayer money -- were closed Monday to accommodate President Obama’s fundraising excursion that ends with a $35,800-per-plate event at movie mogul Harvey Weinstein’s mansion. And Republicans aren't happy about it.

The 238-acre Sherwood Island State Park was closed so the president’s helicopter could land and then take off after a day-long trip that began in Stamford.

The other beach, the roughly two-acre Burying Hill Beach, is adjacent to Weinstein’s mansion and is owned by the town of Westport. Both beaches border the Long Island Sound.

"This is the height of hypocrisy," state House Minority Leader Lawrence F. Cafero Jr. told FoxNews.com.

Cafero, a Norwalk Republican, said he was so shocked to hear the parks would be closed to accommodate Obama's fundraisers that he immediate double-checked his information.

"Purely political," he said. "Can you imagine if George W. Bush in 2004 had requested that our Republican governor shut down the park? It would have made national news. This is wrong in so many ways."

This is not the first time the state park has been closed so a president could use it as an airport for reelection fundraisers in southwest Connecticut.

President Bill Clinton used the Sherwood park twice for trips that included fundraising events. He landed there in 1998 for a series of events that included a fundraiser that reportedly raised $350,000 for his party. A year later, the park was closed for much of the day for Clinton, who attended a fundraising luncheon for the Democratic National Committee and the Women's Leadership Forum that reportedly raised more than $400,000.

Obama began his trip to Connecticut with a fundraiser at the Stamford Marriott Hotel, then will attend Weinstein's evening fundraiser that is reported to include such celebrities as Anne Hathaway, Aaron Sorkin, Joanne Woodward and Vogue editor Anna Wintour.

Beyond forcing beach-goers to swim elsewhere on a hot summer day, the state will also lose daily parking fees -- $9 for in-state visitors and $15 for out-of-state cars, critics say.

"I don't like to inconvenience the public to any degree," Westport Selectman Gordon Joseloff said Monday morning. "But I understand that security is paramount."

Joseloff, a Democrat, said he had already gotten phone calls about local tax dollars being spent on additional security and that beach-goers were being turned away "as we speak."

Obama has held more fundraisers than 5 previous presidents COMBINED

Barack Obama has already held more fundraising events to build cash for his re-election bid than all five Presidents since Richard Nixon combined, according to figures to be published in a new book.

Obama is also the only president in the past 35 years to visit every electoral battleground state in his first year of office.

Doherty, who has compiled statistics about presidential travel and fundraising going back to President Jimmy Carter in 1977, found that Obama had held 104 fundraisers by March 6th this year, compared to 94 held by Presidents Carter, Ronald Reagan, George Bush Snr, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush combined.

Since then, Obama has held another 20 fundraisers, bringing his total to 124. Carter held four re-election fundraisers in 1980, Reagan zero in 1984, Bush Snr 19 in 1992, Clinton 14 in 1996 and Bush Jnr 57 in 2004.

Obama more reliant on large donors, fundraisers

“It confirms everything we’ve always believed about the role of big money in politics,” said Ellen Miller, executive director of the Sunlight Foundation, a watchdog group that tracks political fund-raising. “The more you give, the more you gather, the more you get.”

I take offence to your comment as our daughter is a Conservative and we are escorting her to trial on Tuesday to get her out of an emotionally abusive marriage. Liberals and Conservatives alike can marry the wrong person and way to often the only safe thing to do is GET OUT vows or not.

Oldtimer was wrong in assuming the newlyweds are on their 2nd 3rd or 4th marriage and you were just as wrong in assuming it only happens to liberals.

If they want to give they will but to BEG is completely different. Besides on an occasion such as marriage politics should stay out of the occasion.
