Classic story, she was outside (even though she's actually my housecat), got cold and crawled up under the hood of the pickup that was plugged in.
The lesser half went out for his afternoon check on Sunday, started it up, heard a big clunk and saw chunks of black fur fly out. The "clunk" apparently killed the engine. He hoisted the hood to see what had happened and couldn't find anything. No cat. No cat pieces. Nothing.

Finally tracked her down under the deck with a broken leg, several very large bald spots, a small gash out of the top of her head and a really POed attitude.
I called the vet who said that since she wasn't really bleeding and there were no other injuries, even if we were to bring her up that day, they'd just hold her over night to let her settle down, avoid shock, etc. before knocking her out for any surgery.

Friend of mine was out of town on Monday, so I had to run her store. Which means guess who took the cat to the vet?
What a man. :)
He said the vet told him they could either do surgery, or just let her heal up on her own, which most cats in our area do anyway. And to give her a few shots of PN. They could give her the first one at the office, or he could haul her home and give it at home.

"I just drove a d@#$ cat 40 miles for a $15 office call. You give her the shot!"

She's been pretty slow the past couple of days, but I've noticed today she is starting to drag herself around a bit.

Been there done that!!!!

My HUGE old black tomkat got a broke hind leg......$400 later it was all healed up!!!!!!

What can I say...I take care of my critters!!!

HMW- You just reminded me of why I don't care if I ever have a cat on the place...Too many times at 20-30 below trying to replace or having to get new belts because some cat went thru them......

House Cats No!
Barn Cats OK!

Plaster of Paris and gause - I've set many a animal bones the :cboy: way Doctor (FIX IT or SHOOT IT) Doctor Lead

for the kids/cityfolk Sake - "Dr Lead" sent/sends them to Canada :!:

The ole ranch dog had a sore on his side and after a day was taken to the vet driven 60 miles. The vet said him licking it clean was the best for him was told a shot of penicillin should be given and sent a $40 bill! All for about 6 min and the vet telling to give a shot. :?

At least our vet works cheap!

OD/NT--I've tried barn cats. My dogs kill them too fast. Much as I'm not much of a cat person, I've yet to live in company housing that didn't have mice. And a cat is more kid friendly than D-Con.

He was quoted $200 but the vet said she was just as likely to heal up without surgery as with so he'd really suggest just leaving her be.
But I know what you mean about spending money on your critters.
We're with our current vet actually because I decided our last one was worthless.
My ten year old basset/blue heeler hadn't been eating and was losing a lot of weight so I hauled her to the vet.
He did some bloodwork, nothing showed up.
"Change her food." To Science Diet, of course. "She doesn't like what she's currently getting."
I tried the SD, but amazingly enough, that wasn't the problem. Took her back in and he acted like I was asking something completely irrational by thinking we should continue looking for the problem. :x

I took her to my current vet and his first thought was, "Hmmmm... Maybe and obstruction. Let's do a barium x-ray and see what's going on."

And he continued to hunt, tell me what my options were, what it would cost, suggested the specialists over in Ft. Morgan, etc. until the biopsy he'd taken of her small intestine came back from KState as cancer.
Again he gave me several options including chemo (but pointed out that since she wouldn't eat, it'd be hard for her to make it)

Six hundred dollars to decide I had to put my baby down.

The office would be happy to take payments whatever/whenever I could send them in. So needless to say, despite not being able to save my dog, I'm eternally loyal.

A guy took his parrot into the Vets office and asked the Vet to take a look at him. The Vet told the guy his parrot was dead. The guy said "he can't be dead, check him again!" The Vet opened a door and a cat came out, jumped up on the table and looked at the parrot and walked away. The vet opened another door and a big Black Lab came out, walked around the parrot, sniffed it and walked away. The Vet again said your parrot is dead. The guy left and about a week later got a bill from the vet for $275.
He called the vet and was really ticked off. "How in the hell could it cost me $275 to find out my parrot was dead"?
The vet replied, $50 for an office visit, $125 for the Cat Scan & $100 for the Lab work!
