Health Insurers Try to Scuttle Obama Plan

The insurance industry quickly challenged Schumer's proposal during Tuesday's hearing, saying government can never compete fairly with private industry.

Truthful statement if I ever heard one.

I think governments should tax us a little more, and provide "free auto insurance"

That way there won't be a discrepancy in premiums, no matter how often drivers are in accidents. We'll just average out the premiums!

I watched much of this forum last night- and the insurance industry is nervous...One of the things that was brought up was that since 2000, with the consolidations of these major insurance companies, even tho their are numerous different named policies- there actually are less than a handful of different corporate entities providing all health care insurance- with 2 or 3 providing 90% of all coverage and absolutely no competition...

The insurance industries spokesman Karen Ignagni admitted that because of some previous actions in the industry much of the public has lost all trust with insurance companies....But she believes with some strong federal guidelines and regulations- and enforcement- for all companies-- that these companies could be brought into line- and be forced to be competitive....And they could regain that consumer/public trust....

And with a requirement that insurance coverage is mandatory it would create a much larger base to pay for and bring down insurance cost- and which would eventually bring down all health care costs....

But she said- no matter if we have a public plan to compete with the private plans- they all need a level playing field (identical rules and guidelines) and a referee (federal overseers) to guarantee they are all playing within the rules...

I'm sure C-SPAN will replay this again in the next few days- and everyone should watch if you get a chance...This is the second of 4 forums the Senate has held chaired by Sen Baucus and Grassley....

Most people think when the ENTIRE population is added to the insurance rolls, the price will go DOWN!!!!

It won't, wait and see..................

There's those in Canada that think it is "free" also. There needs to be some way to show how much you are costing the system in my opinion.

We used to have a token premium here in Alberta, they just discontinued it.

In my opinion, even if the government was to send out a itemized usage "bill", it would bring attention to it not being "free".

And there is nothing wrong be a regulated "visit charge" either.
