Heel Fly- Sale

I saw where you had some calves for sale today. How did it turn out? I missed that part of the sale.

Don't worry, I won't tell under threat from a firing squad, what your ranch name is, if you don't want me to.

I am just wondering about the market, as we are selling some fairly soon.

Was there a Superior Sale today, Tap?

Or was it another video company?

We got a letter from Jack McGuinnis today saying he is now
a rep for Superior (after he made note that he was the one who
started Northern Video, then sold the whole sheebang to Pat
Goggins.)

To answer your ?'s FH, yes, and maybe. I don't want to spill the beans if Heel Fly is concerned about things being private. Maybe it is no big deal anyway. They must have sold so well, that they are still out on a big rippin' party.

Hey Tap
I was a little disappointed that they weren't as high as last year but only off by .04 so I guess we can't be greedy. The load of steers brought 132. and then they really got us on the split load they were 127.10. We have had troubles with the split load before. Man heifers are hard to move. I was able to get dad into Lucas's mom and dads house and he was very happy to be able to watch the calves sell. That made everything else worth it. (He had a massive stroke in Sept.)
FH it was the Northern sale.
Compared to the rest of the calves in there class they ( other then the 136.00 calves) sold better then or right with the other 400-500 whts.
By the way Reno Cr. Ranch Inc.

Good for you guys, Heel Fly. I think any of these prices now are nice to get. I hope they last a while. We taped some loads of calves today for the Western Livestock Video sale. The calves and grass looked good. The rep. said they tape better in short grass, so as to see the cattle best, but I sure liked the green background. :)

I did take a look at Northern's results late last night, and their prices are all over the board. I think freight has a lot to do with that. The far northern MT calves showed that I thought. Sorry Oldtimer. :( Maybe fuel will come down and that spread will close up. I thought one bunch of calves from a ranch S. of Miles City sold real well. I saw those cattle once, and they were good ones.

Glad you did well.

Tap- We are kind of used to freight hitting us...I know last year that calves up here were sometimes selling anywhere from $5 to $10 cwt cheaper than SD or Nebraska calves because of freight costs and lack of availability of trucks...

Will probably hurt more this year- altho I watched an hour or so of Superior today with calves from here selling, and they didn't seem too bad...Some selling about as much as last year, altho overall I know some of the ones I watched were weaker by about $5-10..... Some 560- 580 weight steers that sold around $131 last year were $122 this year.....Still close to $700 head.....

And again this year they are paying more for the heavy calves-- saw a few sorts of 650- 700 lb calves for Oct- Nov delivery selling for $775 to over $800......Thats nothing to sneeze at.......

We were going to bid on some from Montana but they were out of our price range. We are getting burnt pretty good right now and just a little gun shy. The calves looked good that I had seen.

All in all, most of this is promising news. A few folks getting pinched, but compared to the bottom of the market, it isn't too bad.

The fat market starting sliding a while back, but if we are only off a few dollars from last year, we are still in great shape, no?

The top will occur sometime soon, or maybe already has.

The best we can hope for is a slow drop, rather than rapid.

Badlands.

One of the other interesting things I noticed in watching our region cattle selling over the last several sales-- Less than 1/10th are selling as RFID tagged and age verified- and those are not bringing any really distinquishable bonus or higher price....On the other hand they are paying a little higher for the affidavit cattle verifying source, and all natural (no hormones, no antibiotics), and preconditioned...

Few buyers starting to snoop around up here a little making some offers now- and so far I haven't talked to one that wants or requires the tags...
