I had a business question I was thinking of purchasing 20 bred heifers calving them out and selling them in april as pairs. I don't run enough cows to support my family so i work construction during the summer i m layed off in the winter. I built a new calving barn a year ago so i have the facilities . I have the time the facilities and if i bought feb calving heifers I could be done calving before my cows start calving march 1st. just wanted some input

it might work...in my opion, there are alot of awfully good heifers selling for much less than they are probably worth. this could be the year to give it a try.

If you do I'd make sure to give everything a Scour Shot of some sort. I have'nt in the past and got caught with a bug mine were'nt used to. Very costly for me. We give the Scour Boss 9 Shots they need to be boosted with the Scour Boss 4 three weeks after the first shot then just a yearly booster of the 9 a bit costly but well worth it in my eye. Good Luck to you.

I was wondering about bouncing viruses back an forth between new heifers and my orginal herd scours is my main worry but i think i can pen the heifers and the old cows seperate . I was looking at the april sale from last year and heifer pairs were bringing 1400 to 1475 on about 200 head. heifers the day after thanksgiving this year avg 1240 on 240 head .I think i can pick up some decent hfers for 1000 a head the end of dec. see what happens

The scour bug will travel on tires and boots $5 a head for scour boss is cheap insurance in my opinion..

Sounds like a chance to turn some pairs, might as well give it a shot.Ranching as we all know is a gamble under any model,so put your quarter in,pull the handle and hope for three 7's.Good luck! And of course do some good sound home work, sounds like you have.

If you are worried about disease, don't forget the MINERAL...the MINERAL...the MINERAL. Good mineral will go a long way in keeping
cattle healthy. Makes the colostrum the best it can be which
enhances the IMMUNE SYSTEM.

Good luck to you.
