Neighbor Lady come over for a visit yesterday, weather was perfect for barbecueing,so she decided to bring a couple steaks she bought at the local super market.
I dont see much store bought meat and when I read the package/sales price I found it hard to believe $15.05 per pound.
I realize there is a big differnce in the comparision of my 8 weight steers bringing $100CWT at the sale, back out finishing/processing/retailing etc.....but it's dam obvious to me who is making the money, packers retailers can pay more for beef, but wont as long as they can source cheap beef, stamp it USDA and get the American housewife believing it is a product of the USA.

Hmmmm...I am jealous.....I only charge $14.00/lb for my best cuts.......But, that is my own fault so jealousy is gone, LOL

Haymaker, do the work and you can get that $15.00/lb, if you do it well, you can get more.....However, it does require making the decision. If I want it done right and be rewarded for doing so, I am willing to do it myself,

BTW, I always have to tease a Texan, mainly cause I like them...Sooooo...That being said....If we require Beef from foriegn countries to be labeled, does that mean all the Beef from Texas will have to have the Lonestar Logo?

;-}

Haymaker, According to the USDA Beef Cutout Prices, on July 6, the packers were selling "Choice" Whole Primal Loins for $2.14 per lb. Whole Ribeyes were going for $2.00. After trimming, the grocer MAY have $3.00 in them.

Although the packer makes money on everything but the Moo, those big markups on steaks are coming from the Distributors and Retailers.

Ground and Chucks aren't marked up nearly as much, just to get people in the door.

I am the one that is jealous PPRM, no not really, envious would be a better description, wish I had the time/knowledge/marketing skills to do what you and Robert Mac do.
Always get a bad feeling when I open the trailer gates and let the steers I worked hard on out into the pens at sales barns, seems like alot of work for a little money.............good luck

Yup....... Had a friend that sold on the grid with some vary top of the line steers... He said that the spread from cab and select and choice wasn't that big of a spread...... But had one grade 4 and it took alot to make up the differance.. Made us rethink about going that way...... Not that we have grade 4s, but the spread for quality wasn't worth it........

That is a very typical seasonal price action, though maybe the high a few months ago was more then normal.....

I sell on the grid all the time. I sort my own cattle and have an 83% choice average. The thing is the majority of those are calves I pick up at the salebarn.....

I decided I needed an outlet for cattle that I raised and did not fit my Private beef Program. I also wanted to get some numbers so I could do some things to get my costs down. If you can consistently raise good cattle or are adept at feeding cattle up, I think long term you do better on the grid than not.....

This time of the year the spreads are not that significant. Part of grid selling is timing. We missed it this year as we set up our own feeding last winter. As with anything new, the timing of the first year was off, so we started shipping mid to late May calves that should have went in Paril and early May. Our finishing pens weren't complete and we just did not finish cattle soon enough.....

I will say, if you can feed and sort, the rest is genetics. I do well on Quality grade and te only time I get tripped up on YG is if something genetically has a small Ribeye.....I had one recently like that. The rest of the cattle on that lot hit 87% choice with mainly YG 2 and 3...But one animal was YG 5......That one off when I have done so well sorting Ithe rest that looked like him, I attribute to Rib-eye on the bought calf....

Keep in mind, the guy buying calves off the grid has built in a buffer in the price for those that do not grade, In My Opinion anways.

I will say I generally stay away from the Bull Session area, but have enjoyed the conversations the last few days. Seems like it is more civil than it used to be,

Me too PPRM...... :D
Nice to compair ideas with out being humiliated ain't it??
This helps me NOT to think of jody and his family. YOu have good methods PPRM.. Seems like we just couldn't get organized soon enough so we could hit that early market.. And I think it was that way with alot of folks in this area........ Although last month when we sold fats they hadn't seen alot of new crop cattle yet.....

Yes Katrina, The Jody and his family deal keep things in better perspective. I have met so many people in the Cattle industry with different opinon. The majority are great people, just different ideas. I'd like to see more of the money spent on fighting go to programs that make a difference.....And the energy given to name calling looking for real solutions.

We have posted and Pm'ed back and forth enough that I have become pretty impressed by the attitude you folks have. Yes, the market has dropped a lot. We air it out and then look at what we can control...That is a huge measure I look at. Folks that look at what they can have an influence on,

If it is hot, hope you find a nice cool shade tree in a nice river....
