Question
My question is about uncontrollable laughter. Particularly when I'm in social situations, even with close friends, I keep on bursting into laughter for no aparent reason. Absolutely nothing is funny: I'm frustrated that I'm laughing, but I'm unable to stop.It goes on for 10s of minutes. I can hardly breath or speak. Sometimes by the end I'm feeling sad at the same time, choking back tears. Obviously the amusement factor for my friends wears off after a couple of minutes of completely unexplained laughter.
It happens when I'm alone too, but is not embarassing; I'm not speaking so it's easier to stop.
Have you heard of anything like this before as a problem, and is there any way to stop?

Answer
This sounds like a symptom of anxiety---but since it also happens when you are alone, I'm not sure that completely fits.
The technical term for what you have is "affect lability". Sometimes people have this after they suffer a stroke---the frontal lobe of the brain causes laughter/crying for no apparent reason and the person gets quite confused.
So for you.....first, go the easy route and see if you are anxious or in some way trying to garner attention (the behavior certainly does that!). If so, then you should dig deeper, perhaps with a therapist, to see what is underneath this behavior.
If you are truly out of control with it and it even feels scary, then your next step should be to a neurologist. Be CLEAR that this is out of your control and not a function of psychology or mood. There may be something medical going on, and that should be ruled out.
